Job Summary

Based at the Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust, the team will be uniquely positioned between the clinical and research arms of the programme, aiming to deliver clinically driven deployment of AI in the NHS, as well as research-led validation of AI tools using world-leading infrastructure.

The Digital Pathology AI Scientist position will provide a pivotal role in advancing the use of AI in the NHS, aiming to reduce waiting times for cancer patient diagnoses and operational costs for hospitals. To succeed in this role, the post holder will need in depth knowledge and skills in the development and application of Artificial Intelligence applied to healthcare. Successful applicants will build, deploy and evaluate existing software tools in both research and clinical settings.

The post holder will be required to keep up to date with existing research trends and methodologies, and have the flexibility to react to external factors that may steer the direction of current research activity. The ability to manage workloads to support existing research projects as well as undertaking independent research is essential.

The National Pathology Imaging Co-operative (NPIC) programme works collaboratively with Hospital Trusts, Universities, and commercial companies, to drive the adoption of Digital Pathology (DP) and diagnostic Artificial Intelligence (AI) for the benefit of patients across England.

NPIC is a multidisciplinary and highly motivated team that is working to deliver these challenging ambitions. As a part of this team, you can expect a supportive environment, with management that is receptive to the needs of individuals. NPIC staff are supported in their continued development through training, and opportunities to be involved diverse aspects of a multimillion-pound programme.

What you will bring to the role

As part of this post a successful candidate will be expected to have a doctoral qualification (or close to completion) in AI in healthcare or a similar field, with a good understanding of DP imaging and the routine issues that affect AI development and accuracy. The primary role of the position will be to implement and evaluate the viability of digital pathology AI diagnostic tools, in terms of accuracy and reliability, and therefore requires excellent technical and analytical skills. Additionally, the role will involve developing a broad range of AI tools and technical solutions to assist with a diverse range of research projects within the programme. A successful candidate will be expected to work as part of a collaborative multidisciplinary team, whilst managing and prioritising their work independently. The role will require professionalism and high standards of communication, especially when providing reports to senior management and communicating complex technical information to stakeholders.
