We are seeking an experienced Rehabilitation Engineer to join our Wheelchair Services team based in Leicester.
As a Rehabilitation Engineer, you will work in a clinical and technical capacity, taking significant responsibility for patient care relating to the assessment and prescription of posture and mobility equipment. This includes specialist seating, manual wheelchairs, powered wheelchairs, buggies, and associated accessories including specialist controls.
Additionally, you will provide line management for the Field Service Engineer team, overseeing
induction, training, objective setting and appraisal, and ongoing skills development.
The service supports children and adults with severe disabilities, most living with long-term conditions; many are deteriorating, some rapidly, including those in the terminal phase. The successful candidate will possess a flexible, person-centred approach and an appropriate level of clinical, technical and managerial expertise in wheelchairs and seating.
Key Responsibilities:
- Undertake assessment and review of complex mobility and postural needs for people with severe disability, considering posture, functional ability and environment.
- Complete modifications to equipment in line with both manufacturer / MHRA / ISO guidelines to ensure safe and appropriate solutions to meet patient needs using standard modification drawings.
- Modify, assemble and install equipment before or during handover as required, following manufacturer guidance and completing appropriate documentation, testing, inspection and risk management.
- Provide line management for the Field Service Engineer team, including supervision, appraisals, objective setting, coaching and performance management, liaising with the Operations Manager and HR as required; and holding regular team and 1:1 meetings.
- Lead service delivery and development activities, driving quality improvement, ensuring compliance with H&S, IPC and PPE requirements, and implementing robust technical processes that support organisational objectives and patient outcomes.
Skills and Experience:
- Empathetic with a patient-centred focus – ability to understand users’ physical and emotional needs to design effective, comfortable mobility solutions.
- Strong problem-solving skills – capable of assessing complex mobility challenges and developing practical, adaptive engineering solutions.
- Good attention to detail – ensuring precision in measurements, fittings, and adjustments for comfort, safety, and performance.
- Technical competence – solid understanding of biomechanics, assistive technology, and engineering principles relevant to wheelchair design and rehabilitation.
- Effective communication – able to collaborate with patients, clinicians, and multidisciplinary teams to ensure appropriate and successful outcomes.
- The ability to think beyond standard designs to create customised mobility solutions for diverse user needs.
- A willingness to adjust approaches based on changing patient conditions, technologies, or clinical requirements.
- Stay up to date with advances in assistive technology, rehabilitation practices, and materials.
Qualifications:
Essential:
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering (e.g., biomedical, mechanical, rehabilitation engineering) or a closely related field.
- Knowledge of assistive technology and biomechanics – typically gained through formal education, training, or specialised certification.
- Relevant clinical or practical experience in wheelchair provision, rehabilitation services, or assistive device design and assessment.
Desirable:
- Professional registration or certification (e.g., Chartered Engineer status or rehabilitation engineering certification, (IPEM/AHCS/RCT)
- Previous experience in NHS Wheelchair Service
- Moving and Handling Training
