Job Title: Mechanical Design (VA/VE) Engineer

Department: Business Development

Job Purpose: The Mechanical Design (VA/VE) Engineer is responsible for leading the design, development, and continuous improvement of products throughout their lifecycle. This role drives new product introduction (NPI) and value analysis/value engineering (VA/VE) activities to deliver high-quality, cost-effective, and manufacturable solutions that meet customer requirements and regulatory standards.

The position ensures robust engineering design through analysis, simulation, testing, and validation, while supporting cross-functional teams including manufacturing, supply chain, quality, and sales. The role also oversees design governance, documentation, and change control processes, contributing to efficient productionisation and ongoing product optimisation.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Operational

· Lead mechanical design activities for new products through the full New Product Introduction (NPI) process.

· Drive Value Analysis/Value Engineering (VA/VE) initiatives on existing products to improve cost, performance, and manufacturability.

· Interpret and apply customer specifications, standards, and legislative requirements to all designs.

· Develop design concepts supported by engineering calculations and capability studies.

· Carry out Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and simulation to validate product performance.

· Apply Design for Manufacture (DFM) principles and conduct cost reviews to optimise designs.

· Lead and document Design Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (DFMEA) to mitigate risk.

· Produce detailed mechanical designs, including geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T).

· Create and maintain accurate Bills of Materials (BOMs).

· Manage prototyping, tooling development, and validation activities.

· Plan, execute, and support product testing and approval processes.

· Maintain engineering documentation and manage design changes through formal change control.

· Support product productionisation and ensure readiness for manufacturing.

General

· Manage drawing office activities and ensure adherence to design standards and processes.

· Maintain and utilise Product Data Management (PDM) and Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems.

· Collaborate with Supply Chain, Manufacturing, and Quality teams to support production and continuous improvement.

· Provide technical support to Sales teams and contribute to customer-facing activities where required.

· Support internal projects and capital expenditure (CAPEX) initiatives.

· Conduct technical analysis of customer returns and implement corrective design improvements.

· Develop into and act as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) for product lines.

· Ensure compliance with Health & Safety policies and procedures at all times.

· Undertake any other duties as reasonably required.

Knowledge and Skills

· Strong understanding of mechanical design principles and engineering fundamentals.

· Experience with NPI processes and lifecycle product development.

· Proficiency in 3D CAD software and engineering drawing standards, including GD&T.

· Knowledge of FEA and simulation tools and their practical application.

· Experience in DFMEA, DFM, and cost optimisation methodologies.

· Understanding of manufacturing processes, materials, and tooling.

· Familiarity with PDM and PLM systems.

· Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.

· Ability to manage multiple projects and prioritise workload effectively.

· Good communication and stakeholder management skills across cross-functional teams.

· Commercial awareness, particularly in relation to cost reduction and value engineering.

· Commitment to continuous improvement and professional development.

Pay: £50,000.00 per year
