About the Welsh Palaeo Survey Group
The Welsh Palaeo Survey Group (WPSG) is a small independent research initiative based in South Wales. Our goal is to explore and document local geological and palaeontological sites, helping to build a clearer picture of Wales’s prehistoric environments. We work collaboratively to record fossil finds, study sedimentary formations, and share our findings through community outreach and educational projects. This is a voluntary role designed for people who are curious about science, enjoy outdoor work, and want to gain hands‑on experience in field research. No prior experience is required — training and guidance are provided.
Role Overview
As a Volunteer Palaeontology Assistant, you will support fieldwork and research activities across South Wales. You’ll help identify and record specimens, assist with data collection, and contribute to the group’s ongoing research projects. Some tasks can be completed remotely, such as data entry, research notes, and planning sessions, making this a hybrid opportunity.
Key Responsibilities
- Fieldwork support — Participate in fossil surveys, site visits, and basic excavation work.
- Specimen recording — Help catalogue finds and maintain accurate records.
- Research assistance — Contribute to background research and literature reviews.
- Team collaboration — Work alongside other volunteers and coordinators to plan field days.
- Community engagement — Support outreach efforts and help share discoveries with local audiences.

Pay: £0.01-£0.02 per hour
