Job Title: Science Lecturer (Biology)

Salary: 34,789 to £43,139 per annum
Job Type: Permanent, 0.5 Part-time (17.5 hours a week)
We are looking for a dedicated Science Lecturer with a specialism in Biology to join our Access to Higher Education department. In this role, you will create stimulating, high-quality learning opportunities that enthuse adult students, making subject content relevant, current, and strongly linked to employers and the local economy. Many of our adult learners face unique barriers or may be navigating negative past experiences with education. As such, you will take an empathetic, trauma-informed approach to your teaching, helping to rebuild their academic confidence and empowering them to achieve their full potential.

- To contribute to the College and curriculum area strategic objectives and to actively engage in the annual review.
- To be aware of national developments in subject area and update knowledge and skills on an annual basis.
- To plan, prepare and deliver high quality lessons in order to achieve effective management of the learning process.
- Plan and use a range of effective and appropriate teaching and learning techniques to engage and motivate students and encourage independence and student autonomy.
- Establish a purposeful and motivating learning environment where students feel safe, secure, confident and valued.
- Establish and maintain procedures with students which promote and maintain appropriate behaviour, communication and respect for others, while challenging discriminatory behaviour and attitudes.
- To set and mark work in accordance with College and School Assessment policies.
- To track all students’ progress and attendance in accordance with agreed College systems and policies.
- To provide a balance of appropriate teaching styles and learning experiences.
- To be aware of external/internal assessment procedures and to play and appropriate part in their implementation.
- Evaluate and improve own communication skills to maximise effective communication and overcome barriers.
- To liaise with Head of School in contributing to the design of programmes and teaching approaches which will enable curriculum areas to achieve high standards and value added.
- To liaise with Head of School and curriculum teams in contributing to the administration necessary to support the teaching, learning and assessment within the subject area.
- To work with colleagues with relevant expertise to identify and address additional student English and Maths skills development in subject area.
- To review own professional development needs and to participate fully in future training and development.
- To make a positive contribution to welcome evenings, events and open evenings.
- To ensure that all students in the subject area comply with College’s policies and procedures.
- To provide enrichment opportunities that are exciting, motivating and enhance the student experience.
Generic duties:

- To support cross college actives as required, particularly during key enrolment and invigilation periods.
- Carry out any other relevant and appropriate duties as determined by the needs of the service and as appropriate to the grade.
- Due to the changing nature of our work, this role profile serves as a framework to outline the main areas of responsibility. You may be required to undertake other activities of a similar nature that fall within the remit of your area of work.
Essential Criteria:
- Educated to Level 4 e.g. Degree or equivalent in Biology (or related degree).
- A recognised Teaching qualification.
- Successful recent previous teaching experience.
- Excellent computer literacy – ability to use the current IT programs of the College.
- Proven relevant experience of curriculum planning, development & delivery in maths
- Knowledge and understanding of science-based Access to H.E Diplomas and Level 2 Science qualifications.
- Engaged and passionate about Continuing Professional Development.
- Minimum of Level 2 literacy and numeracy or willingness to complete.
- High level of communication and interpersonal skills, effective member of a team.
- Ability to set high standards for students, colleagues and for themselves.
- Expert communication skills and an ability to develop professional relationships with students.
- An ability to motivate learners with enthusiastic and imaginative presentation.
- Taking responsibility for the progress of learners within your classes.
- Meeting requirements for the assessment and recording of Learners' development. Preparing and marking work to facilitate positive learner development.
