The Role
As a Working CNC Chargehand, you will be responsible for leading the day-to-day activities of the machine shop while actively programming, setting and operating Fanuc-controlled CNC lathes or milling machines.
This role requires a highly skilled machinist who can lead by example, support colleagues, maintain high standards of quality and productivity, and contribute to the continuous improvement of machining operations. You will work closely with production, quality and management teams to ensure customer requirements are met safely, efficiently and on time.
Key Responsibilities
- Programme, set and operate Fanuc-controlled CNC lathes and machining centres.
- Manufacture components to engineering drawings and customer specifications.
- Select appropriate tooling, fixtures and machining strategies to maximise efficiency and quality.
- Produce first-off components and carry out in-process inspections.
- Provide technical support, guidance and mentoring to machine shop personnel.
- Assist with workload planning, scheduling and job prioritisation to achieve delivery targets.
- Troubleshoot machining, tooling and programming issues.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives to improve productivity, reduce waste and improve machining performance.
- Ensure compliance with health and safety requirements and company procedures.
- Maintain high standards of housekeeping, machine care and preventative maintenance.
- Work closely with production, quality and engineering teams to meet customer expectations.
- Support apprentice development and knowledge sharing within the department.
- Develop SolidCAM programming capability as part of future business growth and investment.
Candidate Requirements
Essential
- Time-served CNC machinist with proven experience in a precision engineering environment.
- Strong experience programming, setting and operating Fanuc-controlled CNC machines.
- Experience with CNC lathes, milling machines, or both.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and specifications.
- Strong understanding of tooling, cutting data and machining processes.
- Excellent problem-solving and fault-finding skills.
- Good communication and leadership abilities.
- Ability to work independently and manage priorities effectively.
- Commitment to quality, safety and continuous improvement.
Desirable
- Experience machining large components.
- CAD/CAM programming experience.
- Exposure to SolidCAM or a willingness to undertake training and development.
- Experience within a subcontract or heavy engineering environment.
