Job Summary
We are looking for an experienced Part-Time Accountant to join our friendly and professional practice based in Crofty, Swansea.
The successful candidate will have previous experience working within an accountancy practice or similar environment and will be comfortable managing a varied workload across a range of clients, including sole traders, partnerships and limited companies.
This is a hands-on role covering accounts preparation, VAT, taxation, CIS compliance and general client support.
Previous practical experience using Xero is essential, as the successful candidate will be expected to use the software confidently from the outset. Experience using IRIS Elements for accounts production and taxation is also required.
Duties
The role will include:
- Preparing and submitting VAT returns for a portfolio of clients.
- Reviewing bookkeeping records and identifying and resolving discrepancies prior to VAT return preparation.
- Preparing annual accounts for sole traders, partnerships and limited companies.
- Preparing working papers and supporting schedules for year-end accounts.
- Preparing Self Assessment Tax Returns for individuals, sole traders, partners, landlords and other clients as appropriate.
- Preparing and submitting CIS returns and reports, including dealing with subcontractor information and relevant compliance requirements.
- Using Xero accounting software for bookkeeping review, VAT returns, accounts preparation and general client accounting work.
- Using IRIS Elements for accounts production and preparation of tax returns.
- Reviewing client accounting records and obtaining additional information where required.
- Dealing with routine client queries and enquiries by telephone and email.
- Liaising directly with clients regarding their accounts, tax returns, VAT and other compliance matters.
- Assisting clients with Xero queries and providing general guidance on maintaining accurate accounting records.
- Ensuring statutory and filing deadlines are monitored and met.
- Liaising with HMRC where required in relation to routine client matters.
- Maintaining accurate client records and ensuring work is properly documented.
- Working with other members of the team to ensure client work is completed accurately and on time.
- Undertaking other general accountancy and taxation duties appropriate to the role.
Requirements
- Previous experience working in an accountancy practice or a role involving the preparation of accounts and tax returns for multiple clients.
- Strong practical experience using Xero – this is essential.
- Experience using IRIS Elements for accounts production and tax return preparation.
- Experience preparing VAT returns.
- Experience preparing year-end accounts.
- Experience preparing Self Assessment Tax Returns.
- Knowledge and practical experience of CIS reporting and submissions.
- A good understanding of UK accounting and taxation requirements relevant to small and owner-managed businesses.
- Good numerical and analytical skills.
- Strong attention to detail and a commitment to producing accurate work.
- Good organisational skills and the ability to manage several client deadlines at the same time.
- Confidence communicating directly with clients by telephone and email.
- The ability to work both independently and as part of a small team.
- Good general IT skills.
Qualifications
We are happy to consider applicants who are:
- AAT qualified or part-qualified;
- ACCA/ACA qualified or part-qualified; or
- Qualified by experience with a strong background in accountancy practice.
The level of qualification is less important than having the appropriate practical experience and the ability to carry out the role confidently.
The Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will be someone who is experienced, organised and approachable, and who enjoys working with a varied portfolio of small business and individual clients.
You should be comfortable taking responsibility for your own workload, communicating with clients and progressing work through to completion while recognising when a more complex matter needs to be referred to a senior member of the team.
As this is a client-facing position, a professional but friendly manner and the ability to explain accounting and tax matters clearly to clients are important.
Working Arrangements
This is a part-time position based at our office in Crofty, Swansea.
Working days and hours can be discussed with the successful candidate and agreed depending upon the requirements of the practice and the candidate's availability.

Salary will be competitive and discussed at interview, taking into account the successful candidate's:
- Previous accountancy practice experience;
- Qualifications;
- Level of technical knowledge;
- Experience with Xero and IRIS Elements; and
- Ability to independently manage client work.
