The Science Museum Group encompasses the Science Museum, the National Railway Museum, the Science and Industry Museum, the National Science & Media Museum, Locomotion and the Science and Innovation Park; making us the world’s greatest alliance of science museums.

Our Collections teams play a vital role in caring for, researching and sharing the stories behind some of the world’s most significant scientific and technological achievements, creating inspiring experiences that connect audiences with the ideas, objects and people that have shaped our world.

We’re now looking for two Assistant Curators to join us on fixed-term contracts until Summer 2028, working across two exciting areas: Age of Invention gallery and Space Technology collections.

These roles offer the opportunity to contribute to major projects that explore how science, technology and engineering continue to shape our lives - from 250 years of invention and innovation to humanity’s ongoing exploration beyond Earth.

About the Roles

As an Assistant Curator, you’ll support the development of engaging, audience-focused content and help bring our collections to life through exhibitions, displays and digital experiences.

For the Age of Invention project, you’ll join the curatorial team delivering a major new gallery exploring 250 years of scientific and technological change. You’ll help uncover the stories of inventors, makers and users, connecting remarkable objects with the everyday experiences and ideas that continue to influence our world today.

For the Space Technology project, you’ll work with the Curator of Space Technology to help grow and develop our collection, researching important objects and stories that represent global achievements in space science, engineering and exploration.

Across both roles, you’ll contribute to research, content development, object acquisitions, loans, collections work and digital storytelling. Working closely with colleagues across Collections, Interpretation, Design, New Media and external partners, you’ll help create compelling experiences that inspire and engage our audiences.

You’ll work with academics, historians, scientists, designers, lenders and other stakeholders, building strong relationships and ensuring that our collections are represented accurately, thoughtfully and creatively.

These are exciting opportunities to contribute to ambitious projects at a world-renowned museum, developing your curatorial skills while helping us share stories of curiosity, discovery and innovation.

Both roles are based at the Science Museum in London, with hybrid working available.

About You

You’ll bring a genuine interest in the history of science, technology and engineering, with enthusiasm for exploring how objects and stories can connect with diverse audiences.

You’ll have experience of researching complex topics and communicating them clearly for non-specialist audiences, alongside excellent attention to detail and strong written and verbal communication skills.

Curious and collaborative, you’ll enjoy working with colleagues, specialists and external partners to deliver high-quality outcomes. You’ll be organised, adaptable and confident managing your workload across multiple priorities and deadlines.

You’ll be excited by the opportunity to learn new skills, including working with museum objects and collections systems, and you’ll bring a thoughtful, inclusive approach to your work.
