Job Summary:
Accountable directly to the Trustees for the executive management of the Charity, including fulfilling the Objects of the Charity and implementation of the strategy adopted by the Trustees. The role includes ensuring appropriate corporate governance, financial controls, risk management, maintenance of the property of the Charity and management of staff and should provide leadership of the Charity on a day-to-day basis in accordance with the ethos of the Charity.
As well as Marshall's Charity, the Chief Executive's responsibilities encompass clerk to the Marshall's Educational Foundation and additionally, whilst a contract for services with these charities is in place, clerk to the Newcomen Collett Educational Foundation/St Mary Newington Educational Foundation.
Main Responsibilities:
Financial
The Chief Executive is responsible for the effective financial operation of the Charity and will provide leadership and guidance in all aspects of the Charity's financial activities, ensuring it complies with its financial and regulatory responsibilities.
- To prepare the annual budget for submission to the Trustees for their approval, and once approved, implement the budget.
To operate the financial systems of the Charity as agreed with the Trustees and external accountants, to keep all financial records and prepare:
- Management and financial accounts.
- Audit working papers.
- VAT Returns.

Be responsible for collecting rents.

Administer all payments of grant and overheads including approving and signing all payments.

Be responsible for cash management for the charities.

Assist Christchurch with their quarterly and annual accounts, audit and gift aid.

Manage three staff, working closely with the Surveyor who, like the Chief Executive, is directly answerable to the Trustees but day to day to the Clerk. The Surveyor reports to the property committee.

Oversee the day-to-day running of the office, its equipment and supplies

Responsible for the payrolls of Marshall's, Newcomen Collett Educational Foundation and Christchurch.

Responsible for compliance with Auto Enrolment.

Ensure compliance with current health and safety employment and safeguarding legislation, regularly reviewing policies and practices and updating them where necessary.
The Board of Trustees

Contribute to strategic thinking on future directions for the charities and ways to optimise the returns to their beneficiaries.

Advise Trustees on their duties and responsibilities and identify appropriate training and development opportunities.

Advise Trustees on required policies, preparing drafts and reviewing existing policies.
To administer Trustee meetings and sub committees by preparing agenda, supporting papers, financial summaries and minutes.
Prepare for and attend informal meetings between the Chairman and other officers and staff.
Draft annual returns to the Charity Commission.

Undertake correspondence with grant recipients, dioceses and other third parties.
To undertake all such other duties as shall be reasonably delegated by the Trustees.

A professional accountancy qualification: ACA, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent
Knowledge
Accounting, cash management, liaison with contractors, relevant law
Knowledge of the Anglican Church
Experience
Experience of working in the Charity or wider not for profit sector

Location: Marshall's Charity, 66 Newcomen Street, London SE1 1YT
Responsible To: The Trustees, through the Chairman of the Board of Trustees
Supervises: All staff employed by the Charity and any contractors
Contract: Permanent, five days per week
Remuneration: £90,000 per annum
Benefits: A 15% pension scheme is available plus other benefits to be discussed on appointment
Holiday: 26 days per annum plus office closure between Christmas and New
Year plus bank holidays.
