About us

The UCL Cancer Institute is the hub for cancer research at University College London, one of the World's leading universities. The Institute draws together over 400 talented scientists who are working together to translate research discoveries into more effective therapies for cancer patients.

The Institute has greater clinical links than any comparable centre in the UK, creating a unique opportunity for significant impact on the delivery of clinical service to cancer patients. In particular, the UCL/UCLH Cancer Biomarker Centre (CBC) is a newly established initiative with the goal of developing and implementing novel biomarkers into clinical trials and clinical practice.

Also embedded within the UCL Cancer Institute, is the CRUK City of London (CoL) Centre which provides essential infrastructure to support cancer research within UCL and is a major catalyst in the success of UCL in integrating translational and clinical cancer research with excellent basic science. The Pathology Translational Technology Platform (PTTP) and UCL/UCLH Biobank for Studying Health and Disease form part of this infrastructure, providing histology services and ethically approved access to human tissue for use in research.

About the role

An exciting opportunity has become available at the Pathology Translational Technology Platform (TTP) for a talented Histology Technician. The successful applicant will join a small team responsible for delivering histology services such as tissue processing and embedding, sectioning, staining, slide scanning and constructing tissue micro-arrays (TMAs), in a timely and efficient manner. The Pathology TTP is also planning to further develop our molecular histopathology service, including immunohistochemistry (IHC), nucleic acid extraction and workflows to support spatial transcriptomics.

This role will provide an opportunity to gain valuable laboratory management experience and interact with a wide range of researchers (students, post-docs, clinicians and basic scientists) while supporting research projects across UCL. The post-holder will work closely with the Pathology TTP Manager in delivering histology services and collaborate closely with the UCL/UCLH Biobank for Health and Disease and the UCL/UCLH Cancer Biomarker Centre.

This vacancy would particularly suit candidates aiming to pursue a career in biomedical sciences or translational research and who enjoy getting involved in all aspects of laboratory operations. Comprehensive training in local processes and procedures will be provided; however, candidates must satisfy the core requirements of the person specification.

The post holder would be required to start from the 21st of Sept 2026 and work on-site during the facility opening hours of 9am-5pm Mon-Friday (excluding Bank Holidays). The position is funded full-time until Sept 2027 in the first instance. The successful candidate must be willing to be vaccinated against Hepatitis B. Interviews will take place in person at the UCL Cancer Institute in London between 20th-24th July 2026.

About you

We are looking for an enthusiastic individual with research laboratory experience, who enjoys working as part of a busy team and is committed to providing a high-quality histology service to our users. The successful candidate must have experience of performing microtomy and cryotomy of human or animal samples. They will also need great attention to detail and experience in managing data using spreadsheets and databases. Excellent communication and organisation skills are required.
