Dominic Harris Studio is seeking a skilled Production Technician to join our production team. This is a hands-on, multi-disciplinary role suited to someone equally at home at a soldering bench, in a spray booth, and on a ladder in a gallery on the other side of the world.
Dominic Harris Studio Ltd is the production studio of the digital artist Dominic Harris (www.dominicharris.com), an internationally exhibited artist specialising in real-time 3D graphics and large kinetic sculptures. We produce large-scale interactive artworks for galleries, museums and private collectors internationally. Every piece we ship is the result of multiple disciplines working in close collaboration - design, electronics, fabrication, finishing, software and on-site installation. The right candidate will move confidently between disciplines and will take ownership of problems rather than waiting for direction.
THE ROLE
The Production Technician occupies a central position in our production workflow. Day to day, you will assemble, wire and test the electronics at the heart of each artwork; contribute to the building, finishing and spraying of the physical assemblies that house them; and travel with the installation team to commission pieces on site. No two weeks are the same - you might spend one at the bench soldering custom looms, the next paint-finishing a sculptural housing, and the one after that troubleshooting a fault in a gallery on the morning of a private view.
We are looking specifically for a multi-skilled candidate. This role rewards breadth - we're looking for someone genuinely comfortable across electronics, workshop fabrication, finishing and on-site problem-solving.
NOTE: Please note this role will require travel. As such we are looking for candidates with a full valid passport and able to travel internationally - including the USA.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Electronics and Assembly
- Hand soldering of through-hole and surface-mount components, cable looms and custom assemblies.
- Wiring, crimping and harness building in accordance with studio documentation.
- Functional testing of all artwork builds prior to despatch, using bench test equipment.
- Monitoring component stock levels and raising purchase requests as required.
Workshop and Fabrication
- Working confidently within our fabrication workshop alongside the wider production team.
- Spray painting and surface finishing of housings, panels and mounts to a high standard.
- Use of hand and power tools for assembly, fitting and modification work.
- Maintaining a tidy, safe and well-organised workshop environment.
On-Site Installation
- Travelling domestically and internationally to deliver and commission artworks.
- Diagnosing and resolving electrical, mechanical and finish issues on site, frequently under tight deadlines.
- Representing the studio professionally in all dealings with clients, galleries and contractors.
- Supporting the wider team with documentation, snag lists and post-installation reporting.
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
Essential:
- A confident and precise solderer, proficient in both through-hole and SMD techniques.
- A solid practical understanding of electronics - able to read schematics, use test equipment and reason through circuit faults methodically.
- Comfortable working in a hands-on workshop environment, including spraying, sanding, drilling, fitting and finishing.
- Demonstrable experience with hand tools (crimpers, drivers, rivet guns and similar) and a commitment to doing things properly.
- A track record of working accurately to technical documentation and delivering work to schedule.
- A calm, methodical approach to fault-finding, particularly under time pressure on site.
- Availability and willingness to travel for installations, including international trips.
- Clear and effective communication with both technical and non-technical colleagues.
- Full UK driving licence.
Nice to Have
The following would be advantageous, though we do not expect any single candidate to satisfy every point.
- Experience working with AC and DC systems.
- Familiarity with microcontrollers such as Arduino, ESP32 or Raspberry Pi.
- Experience with the NVIDIA Jetson platform.
- Programming ability in C, C++ or Python.
- Experience with LCD panels and custom LVDS interfaces.
- Spray finishing experience to a fine-art or product quality standard.
- A background in the creative industries, an R&D environment or a comparable studio setting.
- Valid PAT testing certificate.
WHY JOIN US
A few things that make this role different from a typical workshop or electronics job:
- You see the whole arc. From soldering boards to spraying housings to switching the artwork on at the install — you build it, you finish it, and you're there when it goes live.
- The work travels. Recent installations have taken the team to [New York, Los Angeles, + one more]. If you want to see where your work ends up, you will.
- Small team, visible impact. Every piece that ships passes through your hands. Nothing gets lost in process.
- Pieces that matter. Dominic's work sits in significant private and institutional collections internationally — the studio is small enough that one person can have a real fingerprint on what we make.
HOW TO APPLY
Please send a concise cover letter and CV to [email protected]. We strongly encourage applicants to include photographs of work they have built, finished or installed - we are far more interested in seeing what you have made than reading a description of it.
