About us

The UCL Division of Psychology and Languages Sciences is ranked second in the world for psychology (Shanghai Global Ranking, 2022) and is top-ranked in the UK for research power in Psychology, Psychiatry and Neuroscience according to the UK’s Research Excellence Framework 2021. The Child Trauma and Recovery research group in the Clinical, Educational and Health Psychology Department, seeks to understand how to better understand, identify, and address the mental health needs of young people exposed to complex trauma. We are particularly focused on young people with experience of the care system.

About the role

This role would support a large NIHR-funded research project called the MyVoice Project. MyVoice uses a randomised controlled trial (RCT) design to test a comprehensive mental health screening package for children and teens in the care system. We are interested in whether this improves outcomes for children in care, by changing and improving decision-making within and between services. The project started June 2025 and is in the early stages of recruitment.

The Research Assistant would be based within Prof Hiller’s research team, but would be joining a wider team of researchers based across UCL and Newcastle University. Supported by the postdoctoral researchers and Line Managers, the Research Assistant would have a key role in the day-to-day running of the project, including recruiting young people and caregivers, liaising with social care services, assessments with young people and caregivers (online and in-person), and all aspects of data management. They will also have the opportunity to be involved in our co-production work. They will join Prof Hiller’s wider Child Trauma & Recovery research group, where there are regular lab meetings and opportunities for wider learning about the field.

We will consider applications to work on a part-time, flexible and job share basis wherever possible. Minimum part-time option would be 3-days/week.
This role is eligible for hybrid working with a minimum of 60% on site.

The full-time salary for this role will be between £39,807 - £41,833 per annum.

About you

Candidates will have a strong academic background in psychology or a related discipline. They should have relevant experience in a related area and related methods (e.g., managing quantitative data, recruitment of young people, strong record keeping). They will have excellent interpersonal skills for working with children, teenagers, and service providers, as well as within a busy research team. They will be highly organised and detailed oriented. They should have a good understanding of ethical considerations in research and be highly organised and proactive, with the ability to manage the competing demands of a large project.
