Job Summary
We are seeking for our client an experienced Mortgage Underwriter with deep knowledge of the UK second charge mortgage market to join our client's credit underwriting team. You will play a key role in assessing, structuring and approving buy to let landlord financing applications, including those for portfolio landlords, non-standard income and adverse credit with a view to maintaining credit quality and ensuring fast, thoughtful decision-making.
You will work closely with our client's credit lead, product team, and capital markets function to refine credit strategy, deliver robust assessments, and support the ongoing development of their platform's underwriting capabilities.

Key Responsibilities
- Assess and underwrite second charge mortgage applications for UK residential investment properties in line with internal credit policy
- Conduct full analysis of borrower profiles, credit history, income, affordability, and property collateral
- Review and validate supporting documents (land registry, ASTs, valuations, statements, etc.)
- Apply our client’s credit policy while exercising judgment in edge-case and complex credit scenarios
- Recommend decisions and terms with clear rationale and documentation in compliance with audit and regulatory standards.
- Collaborate with credit policy, product, and risk teams to iterate on underwriting processes
- Support the build-out of scalable underwriting frameworks and automation tools
- Stay current on UK mortgage regulations, market trends, and landlord finance developments
Ideal Skills and Experience
- 3–7 years of mortgage underwriting experience, preferably with a focus on UK second charge or buy-to-let mortgages.
- Familiarity with landlord/lender dynamics, including buy-to-let and portfolio landlords, interest coverage ratios and second charge consent process
- Strong analytical skills with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail
- Confident decision maker with proven ability to balance risk, commerciality, and speed in a lending context
- Experience working with technology-driven lenders, brokers, or mortgage platforms is a plus
- Working knowledge of credit bureau data, RICS valuations, AVMs, mortgage underwriting models, and scorecards, digital workflow tools and affordability tools

Pay: From £40,000.00 per year
