Part-Time Tailor, Sewing Machinist & Ironing Assistant
Overview -
We are looking for a skilled and reliable Part-Time Tailor, Sewing Machinist & Ironing Assistant to join our friendly, family-run laundrette in Stoke Newington.
We are introducing both tailoring and ironing as new services, so the role will initially offer a limited number of flexible hours based on customer demand. As these services become established and the workload increases, there may be an opportunity for additional and more regular hours.
The successful candidate will be responsible for handling all customer ironing and alterations. They must have practical experience in clothing alterations, using a sewing machine and ironing different types of garments to a professional standard.
This position may suit someone looking for flexible work or additional income alongside other commitments.
Duties
- Complete all customer ironing to a professional standard using a commercial iron.
- Alter and repair garments according to customer requirements and measurements.
- Carry out customer fittings and provide appropriate alteration advice.
- Accurately measure, pin and mark garments.
- Shorten trousers, jeans, skirts, dresses and sleeves.
- Take garments in or let them out where possible.
- Repair hems, seams, tears, pockets, buttons and zips.
- Operate a sewing machine safely, accurately and confidently.
- Inspect completed alterations and ironing to ensure a high-quality finish.
- Assist with fabric cutting and preparation when required.
- Complete work within agreed turnaround times.
- Handle customers’ garments carefully and responsibly.
- Keep customer orders correctly labelled and separated.
- Maintain a clean, safe and organised workspace.
- Assist with the presentation and packaging of completed orders.
- Follow all workplace health and safety procedures.
Essential Requirements
- Previous practical experience in tailoring, clothing alterations or professional sewing.
- Confidence using a sewing machine independently.
- Ability to take accurate measurements and conduct customer fittings.
- Ability to complete common clothing alterations and repairs to a professional standard.
- Confidence ironing different types of clothing and household items using a commercial iron.
- Strong attention to detail and a good understanding of different fabrics and garment construction.
- Good organisational and time-management skills.
- Ability to manage several customer orders without mixing up garments or instructions.
- Reliable, punctual and able to work independently.
- Friendly and professional when communicating with customers.
- Willingness to complete both tailoring and ironing duties.
- Right to work in the UK.
Desirable Skills
- Experience making garments from scratch.
- Experience with pattern cutting.
- Experience working with lined garments, formalwear or occasionwear.
- Experience replacing different types of zips.
- Professional ironing or laundry experience.
- Previous experience working directly with customers.
Hours
This is a new service, so hours will initially be limited and offered according to the tailoring and ironing workload.
We anticipate offering up to two or three short shifts per week, usually around two to three hours per shift, depending on customer demand. Hours are not guaranteed during the initial period.
We will aim to provide as much notice as possible when offering shifts. If the services become busy and demand increases, there may be an opportunity for additional and more regular hours.
Pay
£12.71 basic hourly rate.
Holiday entitlement and holiday pay will be provided separately in accordance with current legislation.
All working time must be accurately recorded, including any tailoring work agreed to be completed away from the laundrette.
