An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 6 Specialist Occupational Therapist to join our friendly, welcoming and supportive inpatient Occupational Therapy Team at the Bradgate Mental Health Unit. The successful post holder will work within our mental health wards, with opportunities to provide cross-cover and specialist input across our acute, PICU and Forensic services, supported by the wider Occupational Therapy team.

This is an ideal opportunity for an Occupational Therapist who has experience within mental health services and is looking to further develop their specialist clinical skills, leadership abilities and contribution to service development within inpatient care.

As a Band 6 Occupational Therapist, you will hold a specialist caseload and be responsible for delivering high-quality occupational therapy assessments, interventions and discharge planning for adults experiencing acute mental health difficulties. You will utilise advanced clinical reasoning and evidence-based practice to support individuals in identifying and achieving meaningful occupational goals throughout their recovery journey.

You will work collaboratively with multidisciplinary colleagues and provide specialist occupational therapy input within clinical decision-making, care planning and risk management processes. You will be actively involved in ward reviews, MDT meetings, safeguarding processes and discharge planning pathways, ensuring occupational perspectives are embedded throughout patient care.

Vocational and recovery-focused interventions

Our team delivers a diverse and engaging therapeutic programme through both group work and individual interventions, on and off the ward, supporting individuals to maximise independence, participation and recovery.

As a Band 6 Occupational Therapist, you will play an important leadership role within the Occupational Therapy service. You will provide supervision, support and professional guidance to Band 5 Occupational Therapists, Occupational Therapy Assistants and students, contributing to the ongoing development of the workforce and promoting high standards of occupational therapy practice.

You will also have opportunities to contribute to service development, quality improvement initiatives, audit and the implementation of evidence-based practice. We encourage innovation and value staff who are passionate about enhancing patient care and developing services.

You will be joining a large, progressive and highly supportive Occupational Therapy team, with strong professional leadership and excellent opportunities for continuing professional development. We will provide you with a comprehensive induction to the service and site. You will receive regular clinical and managerial supervision, access to senior Occupational Therapy leadership, monthly peer supervision and ongoing opportunities to develop advanced clinical, leadership and service development skills through our established in-service training programme.

Job Description Summary (Main duties and responsibilities)

You will work as a Specialist Occupational Therapist within acute inpatient mental health services, delivering high-quality, evidence-based occupational therapy assessments and interventions for adults of working age experiencing acute mental health difficulties. The service supports individuals whose distress may be expressed in a variety of ways and is understood within the context of their lived experiences, neurodiversity and social determinants of health.

You will be professionally and clinically accountable for managing a specialist caseload, undertaking comprehensive occupational therapy assessments, formulating intervention plans, evaluating outcomes and facilitating safe, recovery-focused discharge planning. You will demonstrate advanced clinical reasoning and autonomous decision-making within complex and dynamic clinical environments.

Your practice will be rooted in the principles of the Mental Health Act, Mental Capacity Act (including Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards), safeguarding legislation and NHS policy, ensuring care is lawful, ethical and person-centred. You will work in alignment with the NHS Long Term Plan, promoting recovery, reducing restrictive practices and supporting least restrictive therapeutic environments.

You will adopt a trauma-informed, neuro-affirming and strengths-based approach, recognising the impact of trauma, adversity and systemic inequalities. Care will be delivered through co-production, working collaboratively with patients, carers and multidisciplinary colleagues to support meaningful recovery, choice and autonomy. You will actively promote inclusion, equality and culturally responsive care in accordance with the Equality Act, Autism Act and current best practice guidance.

As a registered Occupational Therapist, you will practise in accordance with HCPC Standards of Proficiency and the Royal College of Occupational Therapists' Professional Standards. You will maintain high standards of clinical reasoning, risk management, professional accountability and evidence-based practice.

The post holder will provide specialist occupational therapy advice and consultation to multidisciplinary colleagues, patients, families and external agencies. They will contribute to clinical discussions, care pathway development and service improvements to ensure occupational therapy remains central to patient recovery and discharge planning.

You will provide clinical supervision, support and professional leadership to Band 5 Occupational Therapists, Occupational Therapy Assistants and students, fostering a positive learning environment and promoting professional development within the Occupational Therapy workforce.

The post holder will actively contribute to audit, quality improvement, service development and implementation of evidence-based practice. They will support the development of occupational therapy standards, clinical pathways and outcome measurement, helping to ensure high-quality and effective service delivery.

You will maintain compliance with GDPR, information governance requirements and Trust policies, ensuring confidential and appropriate management of patient information at all times.
