About Sister System
Sister System is a registered charity that empowers care-affected girls and young women aged 13–24 to recover from trauma, build resilience, and realise their potential. We provide mentoring, group work, and learning opportunities that promote emotional wellbeing, independence, and pathways into education, employment, and training (EET).
Purpose of the Role
The Peer Mentor plays a vital role in supporting the personal and emotional development of care-affected girls and young women. Through 1:1 mentoring, group sessions, and workshops, you will help the girls and young women build confidence, strengthen their emotional wellbeing, and progress through the Sister System programme.
Key Responsibilities One-to-one mentoring
- Deliver against Sister System’s programmes by providing 1:1 mentoring sessions and small group work to raise resilience, support recovery from trauma, and help each young woman reach her potential.
- Hold a caseload of care-affected girls and young women, including those with complex or multiple needs.
- Build and maintain positive, trusting relationships with mentees that encourage self-reflection, resilience, and empowerment.
Group activities and facilitation
- Take lead responsibility for one or more specialist surgery themes (see person specification), contributing to the planning and delivery of workshops, group sessions and targeted one-to-one support.
- Develop or adapt resources for the relevant specialist theme
- Plan, facilitate and evaluate group sessions, workshops and specialist surgeries, ensuring all sessions reflect Sister System’s trauma-informed approach.
- Deliver mentoring and group sessions across Sister System’s offices, educational settings, and community locations as required.
Recording and measuring progress
- Maintain clear and accurate records on Salesforce CRM for your mentees including communication logs, attendance at 1-1 sessions with you, Record of Activities, 6 monthly surveys and 12 weekly Development & Progress reports.
- Complete necessary training on Salesforce CRM & Outcomes Star.
- Complete Outcomes Star and goal setting every 12 weeks with each mentee
Working with the wider mentoring team
- Participate in reflective practice sessions and ongoing training to strengthen mentoring and safeguarding practice.
- Uphold Sister System’s safeguarding responsibilities, acting promptly and appropriately in line with policy and best practice.
- Contribute to the coordination of mentoring team activities, progress reviews, and delivery planning through regular supervision and team meetings.
- Share appropriate knowledge and good practice with colleagues
- Support internal referrals and signposting
- Work with Pathway Leads and external practitioners where more specialist or clinical intervention is required
Other Generic Duties
- Participate in agreed activities, such as attending meetings and acting as an ambassador for Sister System, promoting the organisation’s mission, vision, and values.
- Be available to support and attend away days, day trips, and respite activities planned for mentees as part of their programme.
- Support with the coordination and delivery of Sister System events throughout the year, including Christmas celebrations and graduation ceremonies.
- Represent Sister System in a professional and positive manner, upholding and promoting the organisation’s ethos and commitment to the empowerment and wellbeing of care-affected girls and young women.
Person Specification Essential
- Experience of working with, or supporting, vulnerable young people.
- Strong interpersonal and active listening skills, with the ability to build trust and rapport.
- Understanding of the challenges faced by care-affected girls and young women.
- The ability to help young people understand and navigate complex systems, advocate for their rights and needs, challenge barriers appropriately, and work effectively with social workers, health professionals, youth justice teams and other agencies.
- Experience of advocating, mediating, and representing young people to achieve positive outcomes.
- Knowledge of the social care, criminal justice and NHS systems, including the pathways, thresholds, statutory processes and professional networks that affect care-experienced and system-involved young people.
- Previous experience working within a community, mentoring, or education-based setting.
- Knowledge of safeguarding and child protection procedures.
- A working understanding and commitment to trauma-informed, anti-discriminatory, and empowering practice.
- Ability to manage sensitive information appropriately and maintain professional boundaries.
- Able to work in a team with lived and professional experience
- Ability to embody and work within a race and gender equity framework
- Resilient and has good strategies to maintain good practice
- Flexible and reliable, able to adapt to changing priorities.
Additional specialist experience/skills required
Candidates should show substantial experience in at least two of these areas:
- Group work, workshop facilitation, specialist surgeries, accredited learning
- Emotional wellbeing, mental health, trauma-informed practice (incl. self-harm/suicide risk)
- Healthy relationships, sexual health, consent, domestic abuse/VAWG
- Child sexual exploitation
- Child criminal exploitation, serious youth violence, contextual safeguarding
- Education, employment, training progression (esp. NEET young women)
- SEND and neurodiversity
- Independent living, housing, benefits, financial capability
- Supporting care-experienced girls through transitions (entering/leaving care)
Desirable
- Lived experience of the care system or experience in mentoring/youth work.
- Experience of working specifically with care-affected girls and young women.
- Access to a car and ability to travel across London boroughs as required.
- Knowledge of local youth and EET (Education, Employment, and Training) services.
- A clear understanding of how legislation, institutional frameworks, risk-management processes and professional decision-making can restrict young people’s choices, independence, access to services and opportunities.
