Estimator / Senior Estimator – Structural & Architectural Metalwork

The Opportunity
MJ Allen Metalwork is looking for an experienced Estimator or Senior Estimator with proven structural and architectural metalwork experience to join our team in Kent.
Experience estimating structural steelwork and/or architectural metalwork is essential. You will need a strong understanding of construction drawings, specifications, material quantities, labour requirements and project costs, together with the ability to produce accurate and commercially competitive estimates.
This is a key role within our pre-construction team, working closely with clients, suppliers, subcontractors, designers and project managers to develop accurate tenders and support the successful delivery of metalwork projects.

What We're Looking For
The successful candidate will have:
- Proven experience as an Estimator within the construction industry, specifically in structural steelwork and/or architectural metalwork – essential.
- Strong ability to read, understand and interpret construction drawings, specifications and associated documentation.
- Experience producing accurate and detailed estimates for construction or metalwork projects.
- A strong understanding of material quantities, labour requirements, fabrication and installation costs.
- Excellent analytical, numerical and problem-solving skills.
- The ability to obtain, assess and negotiate competitive quotations from suppliers and subcontractors.
- Strong commercial awareness and attention to detail.
- Excellent communication and negotiation skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
- The ability to manage multiple tenders and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- A collaborative approach and the confidence to work effectively with clients, suppliers, subcontractors, designers and internal project teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Analyse drawings, specifications, schedules and other project documentation to establish the full scope of works.
- Prepare accurate and competitive estimates for structural and architectural metalwork projects.
- Measure and quantify materials, labour, fabrication, installation and other project requirements.
- Obtain and evaluate quotations from suppliers and subcontractors.
- Review and negotiate supplier and subcontractor pricing to ensure commercial competitiveness.
- Assess project risks, exclusions, assumptions and potential variations.
- Work closely with the design and project management teams to identify cost-saving and value-engineering opportunities.
- Attend project and tender meetings, providing clear commercial and cost-related input.
- Maintain accurate estimating records, pricing databases and supporting documentation.
- Monitor project costs during the construction phase and provide cost updates where required.
- Support the wider commercial and project teams throughout the tender and pre-construction process.
