Northumbria Way Pharmacy & Clinic
Cramlington, Northumberland – near Newcastle
Full-time | Permanent
About the role
Northumbria Way Pharmacy & Clinic is looking for an enthusiastic, newly qualified Community Pharmacist Independent Prescriber to join our supportive and forward-thinking team.
This is an excellent opportunity for a pharmacist who wants to develop beyond a traditional dispensing-focused role. We have invested in automation and efficient dispensary processes so that our pharmacists can spend more time delivering rewarding clinical services and providing high-quality, patient-centred care.
Our modern, purpose-built pharmacy is located within the Northumbria Health & Care Academy, directly beside a busy GP surgery and a short distance from Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital. This provides excellent opportunities to collaborate with other healthcare professionals and develop your clinical knowledge, confidence and prescribing skills.
You will work in a state-of-the-art pharmacy with:
- An automated and efficiently managed dispensary
- A large, fully equipped treatment room with a specialist treatment chair
- A separate private consultation room
- A growing range of NHS and private clinical services
- Support from three highly experienced pharmacists, two of whom are Independent Prescribers
Key responsibilities
- Clinically check and validate NHS and private prescriptions, resolving interactions, contraindications, dosing concerns and other medication-related risks.
- Provide professional oversight of the dispensary and undertake Responsible Pharmacist duties in accordance with legislation, professional standards and pharmacy procedures.
- Safely manage controlled drugs, including their receipt, storage, supply, record-keeping, balance checks and disposal, in accordance with UK law.
- Conduct patient consultations, clinical assessments and prescribing within your competence, including appropriate treatment, safety-netting and referral.
- Deliver and develop NHS and private services, including Pharmacy First, blood pressure checks, contraception, vaccinations, travel health, weight management and ear care.
- Counsel patients on the safe and effective use of medicines and provide medication, adherence and healthy-living advice.
- Work collaboratively with the neighbouring GP surgery, hospital teams and other healthcare professionals to support joined-up patient care.
- Maintain accurate clinical records and contribute to audits, quality improvement, incident reviews and the development of new services.
About you
We would be pleased to hear from applicants who:
- Are registered, or due to register, with the General Pharmaceutical Council
- Hold a Pharmacist Independent Prescribing qualification
- Are newly qualified or at an early stage of their community pharmacy career
- Have a strong interest in clinical services and patient-facing care
- Demonstrate sound clinical judgement and understand the limits of their competence
- Communicate confidently and compassionately with patients and healthcare professionals
- Are organised, reliable and committed to maintaining high professional standards
- Are enthusiastic about learning, innovation and developing new pharmacy services
- Enjoy working collaboratively as part of a supportive healthcare team
Previous community pharmacy experience would be beneficial but is not essential. We are primarily looking for someone with the right attitude, strong clinical values and a genuine desire to develop.
Why join us?
Northumbria Way Pharmacy & Clinic is building a modern model of community pharmacy where automation supports the dispensary and pharmacists are empowered to focus on clinical care.
You will benefit from:
- Mentorship from three experienced pharmacists, including two Independent Prescribers
- A supportive environment for newly qualified pharmacists
- Greater opportunity to focus on consultations and clinical services
- Modern, purpose-built treatment and consultation facilities
- Close working opportunities with a busy neighbouring GP surgery
- Proximity to Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital
- Training and development across a wide range of NHS and private services
- Opportunities to help design and introduce new clinical services
- Genuine potential for professional development and career progression
- A friendly, ambitious and forward-thinking working environment
