Nationwide Fencing Services Ltd is a growing security fencing contractor delivering projects across the UK, currently generating approximately £10M in annual turnover.
We are a busy, operationally driven business with a strong pipeline of work. However, we are now at a stage where we require financial and commercial control to ensure we are delivering projects profitably and operating efficiently.
The Opportunity
We are seeking a hands-on, commercially focused Fractional Finance Director with strong experience in construction or contracting businesses.
This is not a traditional reporting role.
We need someone who will:
· Get into the detail of our projects
· Identify where we are losing money
· Implement job-level financial control
· Challenge our operations and estimating teams
· Drive accountability and improved performance
Key Responsibilities1. Job Profitability & Cost Control
· Implement and embed job-level costing and profitability tracking
· Analyse estimated vs actual costs (labour, materials, subcontractors)
· Identify loss-making projects and root causes
· Provide clear visibility of profit per job, per team, and per job type
2. Labour Performance & Operational Control
· Establish systems to track labour hours vs budget on live projects
· Work closely with operations to identify and address overruns
· Challenge site and project teams on performance and efficiency
· Drive a culture of accountability around labour productivity
3. Estimating & Commercial Feedback Loop
· Review pricing and estimating assumptions
· Identify consistent underpricing or missed costs
· Create a feedback loop between estimating and actual delivery performance
· Support improvements in pricing strategy and margin protection
4. Financial Visibility & Reporting
· Produce clear, simple, and actionable management information
· Develop monthly reporting that reflects true business performance
· Build a reliable view of gross margin and net profitability
· Implement basic cash flow visibility and forecasting
5. Overhead & Cost Base Review
· Analyse company overhead structure
· Identify inefficiencies and cost-saving opportunities
· Ensure the business understands its true break-even point
6. Leadership & Accountability
· Work directly with the business owner and senior team
· Challenge assumptions and existing ways of working
· Drive performance through data and clear communication
· Help embed a commercially disciplined culture
What We Are Looking For Essential Experience
· Proven experience as a Finance Director / CFO / Commercial Director within construction, contracting, or similar industries
· Strong track record of improving profitability and financial control
· Experience implementing job costing and project-based financial tracking
· Deep understanding of labour control and operational performance drivers
