Full job description

We are looking to expand our carriage maintenance team to meet the demand of the expanding business.

Candidates must be enthusiastic and highly motivated; previous experience in the rail industry is preferred but not essential.

The role will involve mechanical fitting and electrical work in all aspects of rolling stock maintenance.

An electrical bias is preferable but not essential. Additional training will be provided where necessary.

Role Overview

The Carriage Maintenance Engineer is responsible for ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of railway carriages through planned preventative maintenance, fault finding, and repairs. This role supports the delivery of high‑quality charter operations, and heritage fleets.

The engineer will work both independently and as part of a skilled maintenance team to carry out scheduled exams, diagnose mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and structural issues while adhering to industry standards, safety regulations, and company procedure.

Key Responsibilities

Conduct detailed inspections, tests, and certification activities to ensure carriages meet railway safety and performance standards.
Carry out routine, corrective, and preventative maintenance on internal and external of railway carriages.
Diagnose and repair defects, faults, and failures in accordance with maintenance schedules and engineering instructions.
Maintain accurate records of all work completed in maintenance management documents.
Ensure all work is completed safely, following safe systems of work, isolations, and risk assessments.
Flexible working hours to support the preparation of carriages for out going services.
Respond to in‑service defects, breakdowns, and call‑outs when required.
Assist other departments to ensure timely fleet availability and operational readiness.
Participate in training, upskilling, and competence development programmes.

Skills & Experience

Essential

Proven experience in engineering, mechanical fitting, or similar industrial maintenance environment.
Ability to read engineering drawings, manuals, and technical documentation.
Competence in use of workshop tools, measuring equipment, and test instruments.

Desirable

Electrical qualification or working towards.
Understanding of safety-critical work and railway industry safety standards.
Background working on passenger carriages, heritage rail vehicles, or mainline certified rolling stock.
Knowledge of braking systems, bogie maintenance, carriage door systems, and railway carriages.
Strong diagnostic and problem‑solving skills in mechanical, electrical, or pneumatic systems.
Forklift license.

Methodical, organised, and able to work to deadlines.
Good communication and teamwork skills.
Flexible approach, with willingness to support occasional overtime or call-out duties.
