Role Purpose

The Maths, English & Creative Arts Lead plays a key role in supporting young people aged 11–16 who face barriers to education, wellbeing, or engagement. The role blends teaching, mentoring, and creative facilitation, helping students build confidence, strengthen core skills in Maths and English, and express themselves through Creative Arts. You will deliver small-group sessions, 1:1 interventions, and practical, hands-on learning within a nurturing, trauma-informed environment.

Key Responsibilities

Deliver engaging Maths, English, and Creative Arts sessions tailored to KS3–KS4 learners, ensuring content is accessible, relevant, and linked to real-life skills.
Provide 1:1 and small-group mentoring, supporting young people with confidence, motivation, behaviour, and emotional regulation.
Adapt teaching approaches for students with SEMH needs, SEND, low prior attainment, or disrupted education histories.
Create a safe, supportive learning environment using relational practice, positive behaviour strategies, and restorative approaches.
Embed literacy and numeracy into everyday activities, projects, and creative tasks.
Plan and deliver creative projects (art, drama, digital arts, music, or mixed media) that build wellbeing, identity, and self-expression.
Track progress and engagement, contributing to individual learning plans, attendance monitoring, and pastoral notes.
Support curriculum development throughout the year, making recommendations and adjustments to meet evolving student needs.
Track, analyse, and develop current recording systems relating to student attainment, engagement, behaviour, and progression, ensuring data informs planning and intervention.
Provide direction and guidance to Entry-Level Learning Mentors during sessions and curriculum delivery to ensure learning goals and student outcomes are met.
Work collaboratively with colleagues, families, and external agencies to ensure consistent support for each young person.
Model positive relationships, resilience, and a growth mindset.
Contribute to wider AP activities, enrichment days, trips, community projects, and celebration events.

Essential Skills & Experience

Experience teaching, tutoring, or mentoring young people in a school, alternative provision, pupil referral unit, or SEMH environment.
Confidence delivering Maths and English up to KS3/KS4 level.
Ability to lead Creative Arts activities (visual arts, drama, music, digital arts, or similar).
Strong behaviour management rooted in empathy, consistency, and relational practice.
Understanding of safeguarding, trauma-informed practice, and the needs of vulnerable young people.
Ability to differentiate learning and support diverse needs.
Excellent communication, organisation, and teamwork skills.

Desirable

Experience in alternative provision, PRU, or specialist SEMH settings.
Experience supporting young people with ASD, ADHD, anxiety, or low confidence.
Qualifications in teaching, youth work, or creative arts (formal or informal).
Ability to bring creative ideas to curriculum design, enrichment, or project-based learning.
Interest in wellbeing, sport, digital media, or outdoor learning.
