Accounts Manager / Senior Accounts Assistant

MJS Group is seeking an experienced Accounts Manager / Senior Accounts Assistant to support the financial operations of a multi-company group operating across construction, property, and related sectors.
This is a hands-on, varied role working closely with the Financial Controller, supporting the day-to-day running of the finance function across several group companies. The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, processing transactions, supporting payroll and subcontractor payments, and ensuring strong financial controls are maintained.
This role would suit someone who is highly organised, detail-focused, and confident working in a busy, multi-entity environment.
Key Responsibilities
Accounts Payable, Payments & Banking
- Processing supplier payment runs and preparing payment batches for approval
- Posting and reconciling bank transactions across multiple company accounts
- Processing supplier invoices, expense claims, and ad hoc payments
- Managing credit card reconciliations (company and project-based accounts)
- Issuing payment notifications and supplier remittances
- Supporting cash allocation and maintaining accurate ledger records
Payroll, CIS & Subcontractor Administration
- Assisting with weekly, fortnightly, and monthly payroll processing
- Processing pension contributions and payroll-related adjustments
- Supporting CIS administration including verification checks, submissions, and certificate processing
- Processing subcontractor payments and maintaining CIS compliance records
- Maintaining payroll changes including starters, leavers, and employee updates
- Uploading and maintaining payroll data within Sage or payroll systems
Expenses, Projects & Operational Finance
- Processing construction and project-related expenses and cost allocations
- Supporting job/project costing and maintaining accurate financial records
- Reviewing and processing staff expenses and business expenditure
- Maintaining records relating to fuel cards, vehicles, and project costs
- Assisting with invoice preparation and allocation of project-related costs
Reconciliations & Financial Controls
- Performing regular bank, credit card, and supplier reconciliations
- Reconciling corporate and project Visa/AMEX accounts
- Supporting monthly control processes and ensuring data accuracy
- Assisting with periodic financial reporting preparation
- Maintaining spreadsheets, finance trackers, and supporting documentation
Compliance, Administration & Support
- Supporting VAT and HMRC-related data preparation as required
- Assisting with insurance administration and policy updates
- Maintaining supplier records, compliance documents, and subcontractor files
- Supporting internal audits, checks, and financial reviews
- Handling ad hoc finance and administrative tasks as required
General Group Support
- Providing finance support across multiple companies within the MJS Group
- Liaising with internal teams regarding payments, expenses, and financial queries
- Supporting the Financial Controller with reporting, reconciliations, and data preparation
- Assisting with general finance administration and business support functions
Candidate Requirements
- Previous experience in an Accounts Assistant, Finance Assistant, or similar role
- Strong understanding of bookkeeping, reconciliations, and transactional finance
- Experience working with payroll and/or CIS (preferred)
- Confident using accounting systems (Sage experience desirable)
- Strong attention to detail and high level of accuracy
- Ability to manage multiple priorities across different companies
- Excel and spreadsheet skills
- Comfortable working in multi-entity environment
Desirable Experience
- Construction or property sector exposure
- Experience with CIS subcontractor payments and compliance
- Exposure to group company structures
- Payroll processing experience
