On behalf of AWE, we are looking for an Engineering Manager (Inside IR35) for an 18 month contract based on site in Aldermaston.

What if you could work on something that you can’t test… but cannot afford to fail? Something that could have spent years on a submarine, is launched into outer space (where the temperature is below -250c), comes hurtling through the atmosphere, being heated up and shaken and then must work? Some challenge. That’s exactly what the team of over 6,500 people at AWE do every day delivering important work, in support of the most important mission - keeping the nation safe.

AWE plays a crucial role in national nuclear security. Their role in nuclear deterrence and their specialist technical assistance to nuclear threat reduction is vital in the defence against the most serious threats faced by the UK. Working to support the defence of our country, AWE has a clear mission to keep everyone, the environment, their products and information, sites, and everything around them, safe and secure.

As an Engineering Manager, your main responsibilities will be to:

Deliver the programme and mobilise resources in a safe, secure and efficient manner.
Be responsible for ensuring that the team produce high quality work, that has been subjected to the correct AWE governance processes as applicable.
Ensure that the work undertaken by the team and/or teams is consistent with AWE strategy, policies, processes, procedures, and quality standards.
Provide effective stakeholder management, engaging others in order to have a positive impact on decisions and programme delivery.
Be responsible for ensuring that the team maintain accurate configuration of engineering deliverables.
Provide ab agile capability, delivering critical skills and resource aligned to business requirements underpinning the Programme.

Essential:

Significant experience delivering engineering or infrastructure programmes in highly regulated environments, ensuring compliance with stringent safety, security, and quality requirements.
Proven capability in leading and contributing to technical design reviews, ensuring engineering solutions are robust, compliant, and aligned with established governance frameworks.
Solid understanding of regulatory frameworks and assurance processes, with the ability to ensure engineering outputs meet organisational and industry standards.
DV Clearance is an essential requirement for this role, as a minimum you must be willing & eligible to undergo checks. Please note, due to the exceptional requirements of this position (short-term nature of this role and speed at which we require a postholder in situ) preference may be given to candidates who meet all of the essential criteria and hold active security clearance.

Desirable:

Background in construction or major‑build programmes, particularly where engineering governance, configuration management, and design assurance are central to programme success.
Experience within the nuclear, defence, or other high‑hazard sectors, bringing familiarity with nuclear safety principles, security protocols, and regulatory expectations.
