Second Chef Job Description

Job Title

Second Chef / Sous Chef

Reports To

Head Chef / Executive Chef

Job Summary

The Second Chef supports the Head Chef in the daily operation of the kitchen, helping to prepare high-quality meals, supervise kitchen staff, maintain food safety standards, and ensure efficient kitchen service. The role requires strong cooking skills, leadership, organisation, and the ability to work well under pressure.

Key Responsibilities

Assist the Head Chef with daily kitchen operations

Prepare and cook meals to a high standard

Supervise and support kitchen staff during service

Ensure food hygiene and health & safety regulations are followed

Help manage stock levels, deliveries, and food storage

Maintain cleanliness and organisation of kitchen areas

Support menu planning and development

Monitor portion control and reduce food waste

Step in for the Head Chef when required

Ensure all dishes are served on time and meet presentation standards

Skills and Experience

Previous experience as a Chef de Partie, Second Chef, or similar role

Strong knowledge of food preparation and kitchen operations

Understanding of food hygiene and HACCP standards

Ability to lead and motivate a team

Excellent time management and organisational skills

Ability to work in a fast-paced environment

Flexible approach to shifts, including evenings and weekends

Qualifications

Professional cookery qualification preferred

Food Hygiene Certificate desirable

Personal Qualities

Reliable and hardworking

Calm under pressure

Team player with a positive attitude

Creative and passionate about food

Working Conditions

Shift work including weekends and holidays

Kitchen-based environment with long periods standing

Job Types: Part-time, Permanent

Pay: Up to £14.50 per hour
