The role:
We are looking for a passionate, dynamic, ambitious registered nurse to join our skin cancer team as a Trainee Skin Cancer Clinical Nurse Specialist (Annex 21)
The successful applicant will attain the knowledge and skills to diagnose and treat various types of skin cancer in the secondary care setting. Fully funded training at master’s degree, level 11, will be provided. Courses include (not exclusive) Clinical Assessment and bespoke Skin Cancer Module as well as Research (training length will be dependent on individual candidates’ previous education. A primary degree is essential.
Yow will work as part of a highly collaborative team spanning plastic surgery, dermatology, oncology, pathology and radiology to provide high quality care to skin cancer patients, in addition to working closely with both the local and West of Scotland regional skin cancer MDT’s.
Key attributes include attention to detail, excellent time management, and the ability to make decisions that will direct patient care. Furthermore, the ability to work autonomously, and as part of a team is vital.
Training will be provided on skin cancer and pre skin cancer lesion recognition, screening for local, regional and metastatic skin cancer, requestion of imaging including both CT and Ultrasound modalities, pathology interpretation, cryotherapy, dermoscopy and minor surgical planning.
Essential to the role is confidence to act as the skin cancer patients’ advocate, respecting patient confidentiality, whilst working in partnership with the Skin Cancer Surveillance Clinical Nurse Specialists.
SSCNS support patients in clinics across GGC as well as Ayrshire and Lanarkshire therefore driving licence is essential.
You need to have a live NMC UK pin in order to be considered for this post.
All other roles will be assessed for sponsorship eligibility in line with current Home Office requirements. NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) can only issue a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) where these are met.

Key responsibilities:
- The CNS will be expected to lead and manage their own nurse-led clinics at various hospital sites within the West of Scotland. They will be expected to perform advanced and autonomous comprehensive physical examinations to assess skin cancer patients, diagnose new skin cancers and metastatic disease, and plan and initiate medical and nursing care to achieve patient-centred outcomes.
- The CNS will be able to refer patients to Consultants and the relevant MDT for further management planning, as appropriate.

The CNS will be required to discuss treatment options in depth with patients, with sensitivity, knowledge and expertise.

The CNS will also be expected to anticipate skin cancer patient’s emotional and physical care needs and refer on to the appropriate service to ensure optimum holistic care is provided
- The CNS will be expected to refer skin patients to the appropriate local or regional skin cancer MDT. This will involve comprehensive review of the patients’ medical history and anticipate treatment options from other specialties such as oncology. The CNS will then be expected to provide clinical advice, often complex, to the MDT on the care of the patients within the plastic surgery specialty, acting as patient advocate, and contributing to the development, implementation and monitoring of care pathways. The CNS will, therefore, need to be confident in public speaking, as the regional MDT has many members consisting of other specialty CNS’s, senior medical staff from plastic surgery and other specialties and allied health professionals.

The Plastic Surgery CNS service is regional to the West of Scotland, therefore, the CNS will also require to have a full driving license as their autonomous nurse-led clinics will not only be within the Greater Glasgow Healthboard hospital sites, but may also be within Ayrshire and Arran and Lanarkshire Healthboard hospital sites.

Practice within the Legal & Ethical framework as established by Nursing Midwifery Council (NMC) and National Legislation to ensure patient interests and wellbeing are met.
- Work within the National Health Service (NHS), NHS Greater Glasgow and Health & Safety Executive (HSE) Legislation, Policy, Guidelines and Procedures.

Create academic links with appropriate Higher Education Institutions, continuing the development of pre and post registration teaching within speciality.

Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:
- First Level Registered Nurse with a minimum of 5 years post registration experience.

5 years experience in area of speciality and appropriate post registration qualification/relevant experience.
