The Opportunity
Based at Scarlaw Farm, approximately 8 miles from Duns, this role forms part of the Estate's Hill Farming enterprise and reports to the Head Gamekeeper.
The successful candidate will work alongside the existing shepherd at Byrecleugh and the wider gamekeeping team, taking responsibility for the day-to-day management of approximately 1,750 Scottish Blackface ewes and ewe hoggs, together with 420 wedders, across 4,100 acres of in-bye and hill ground within a wider 10,000-acre managed moorland environment.
This is a permanent, long-term opportunity for someone looking to develop their agricultural career within a progressive and well-managed rural estate.
The flock lambs outdoors between mid-April and May and produces a combination of finished lambs, store lambs and replacement ewe lambs. The sheep enterprise also plays an important role in supporting the estate's wider land management objectives, including grouse moor management and tick control.
Key Responsibilities
- Day-to-day management of approximately 1,750 ewes and ewe hoggs.
- All aspects of sheep husbandry, including lambing, gathering, dosing, jagging and flock health management.
- Maintaining high standards of animal welfare and stockmanship.
- Livestock record keeping and administration.
- General farm duties and basic machinery maintenance.
- Working collaboratively with the estate's shepherding and gamekeeping teams.
About You
We are looking for a practical and capable individual who is passionate about hill farming and takes pride in maintaining high standards.
You will have:
- Previous experience in hill sheep management
- Excellent stockmanship and animal husbandry skills
- The ability to work independently and make sound decisions
- A strong work ethic and positive attitude
- Good communication skills and the ability to work as part of a team
- A full UK driving licence
- Working dogs
- Experience operating farm machinery
