Full job description

(Female) Bank Health Care Assistant – Days & Waking Nights

Newton Abbot Area

We are recruiting for a female Health Care Assistants (HCAs) to support a 14-year-old young person with complex medical needs in the Bovey Tracey area. Opportunities are available for bank shifts 07:00 – 17:00/17:30 weekday day shifts or 21:00 – 09:00 waking night shifts.

Please note that due to the intimate nature of care carried out in this role, it is restricted to female applicants only; Schedule 9, Part 1 of the Equality Act 2010.

The client has a C5 spinal cord injury and associated health needs including autonomic dysreflexia, ventilator dependency, tracheostomy, suprapubic catheter, and epilepsy. They are bright, resilient, and enjoy learning, reading, and spending time with family and friends. The family are members of the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church, and their cultural and religious values are central to daily life.

This is a rewarding opportunity to work within a small, consistent team, providing high-quality, person-centred care with strong professional support.

The Role

Weekday day shifts are required year-round, including during school holidays.

During term time, weekday shifts typically involve:

Supporting the client with their morning routine at home
Travelling with them to school
Remaining with them throughout the school day, working alongside the school’s Teaching Assistant to support care, comfort, and safety

On school holidays, weekday shifts are based at home or in the community and may include:

Supporting daily routines and activities
Accompanying the client to therapies, including hydrotherapy
Supporting participation in family and community life

In addition, the client attends hydrotherapy during the school week, including one day per fortnight when hydrotherapy replaces attendance at school. On these days, the HCA will support the client to attend hydrotherapy rather than school.

Night shifts involve:

Continuous ventilator and tracheostomy monitoring
Repositioning and comfort
Seizure monitoring
Maintaining vigilance throughout the night
Bowel care
Preparing for handover to the day team

Key Responsibilities

Deliver safe, person-centred care including tracheostomy care, ventilator monitoring, suctioning, seizure monitoring, catheter care, and repositioning (training provided)
Monitor for signs of Autonomic Dysreflexia and respond appropriately
Complete accurate care records and handovers
Work respectfully within the family home and school environment
Recognise and respect cultural and household expectations
Work collaboratively as part of a consistent care team

Essential Criteria

Previous experience providing care (personal care, or a health setting)
Moving and handling using a hoist
Willingness to undertake specialist training (tracheostomy, ventilator care, catheter care, epilepsy, and Autonomic Dysreflexia)
Good communication skills
Reliability, professionalism, and commitment to safeguarding

Desirable

Experience supporting children or young people with complex needs
Experience with spinal cord injury and Autonomic Dysreflexia
Confidence using electronic care records

Hours & Pay

Available shifts include:

Weekday day shifts: up to 10.5 hours per day (term time, school-based; school holidays home/community-based) £19 per hour
Waking night shifts: 12-hour shifts £22 per hour

This role requires an enhanced DBS (funded by the employer) and registration with the DBS Update Service.

You will be employed directly by the client; StanleySmith Case Management oversees all aspects of the care package on their behalf.
