Functional Skills Maths Level 2 Tutor
Reports to: Course Leader / Curriculum Manager
Purpose of the Role
To deliver high-quality Functional Skills Mathematics teaching, learning and assessment to learners and apprentices working towards Level 2 qualifications. The post-holder will support learner achievement through effective teaching, assessment, progress monitoring and targeted intervention, ensuring learners develop the skills and confidence required to succeed and progress.
Key Responsibilities
Teaching and Learning
- Plan, prepare and deliver engaging Functional Skills Mathematics lessons at Level 2.
- Deliver teaching to individuals, small groups and whole classes.
- Differentiate learning to meet individual learner needs and abilities.
- Create an inclusive learning environment that promotes participation, confidence and achievement.
- Use a variety of teaching methods and resources, embedding vocational and real-life contexts where appropriate.
Assessment and Learner Progress
- Conduct initial, diagnostic and formative assessments to identify learner needs.
- Set, monitor and review individual learning targets.
- Track attendance, progress and achievement using organisational systems.
- Provide timely feedback and implement intervention strategies where required.
- Prepare learners for Functional Skills assessments and examinations.
Learner Support
- Provide targeted support to learners requiring additional assistance.
- Work with curriculum and support teams to identify and address barriers to learning.
- Support learners to develop confidence, resilience and independent learning skills.
- Contribute to learner reviews, progress meetings and action planning.
Quality Assurance and Compliance
- Maintain accurate learner records in line with organisational and awarding body requirements.
- Participate in quality improvement activities, observations and standardisation meetings.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of Functional Skills requirements and best practice.
- Comply with safeguarding, equality and diversity, health and safety and data protection policies.
Collaboration
- Work effectively with curriculum leaders, vocational tutors, apprenticeship coaches and support staff to maximise learner achievement.
- Contribute to curriculum development and the sharing of good practice.
- Support learner recruitment, induction and promotional activities as required.
Essential Qualifications
- GCSE Mathematics Grade C/4 or above (or equivalent).
- Recognised teaching qualification (AET, Cert Ed, DET, PGCE or equivalent).
- Functional Skills Mathematics Level 2 (where not evidenced through a higher-level mathematics qualification).
Essential Experience
- Experience delivering Functional Skills Mathematics at Level 2.
- Experience supporting learners aged 16+ and/or apprentices.
- Experience assessing learner progress and implementing interventions.
- Proven ability to support positive learner outcomes and achievement.
- Experience using learner management and tracking systems.
Essential Knowledge and Skills
- Strong knowledge of the Functional Skills Mathematics curriculum and assessment framework.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to motivate and engage learners with diverse abilities and confidence levels.
- Effective classroom management, organisational and administrative skills.
- Competent use of Microsoft Office and digital learning technologies.
Desirable
- Experience within Further Education or Apprenticeship provision.
- Experience teaching GCSE Mathematics resit programmes.
- Assessor qualification (TAQA/CAVA or equivalent).
- Experience working with awarding organisations such as Pearson, City & Guilds or NCFE.
