Job Description
We are looking for a knowledgeable and enthusiastic Plant Assistant Manager to join our team at our Garden Centre in Radcliffe, Bury. Supporting the Plant Area Manager, you will help oversee the day-to-day running of the horticultural department, ensuring exceptional customer service, high standards of plant care, and an attractive, well-stocked plant area.
Working closely with the management team and department colleagues, you will help drive sales through excellent customer service, proactive merchandising, and effective stock management. You will assist with ordering plants, maintaining stock levels, and ensuring the department is presented to the highest standards at all times.
Applicants should have excellent plant and plant care knowledge and previous supervisory or team leadership experience within the horticultural or retail sector. You should be friendly, approachable, enjoy working with customers, and be physically fit, as the role involves working outdoors in all weather conditions. Excellent spoken and written English is essential.
Key Responsibilities
Staff Support & Supervision
- Assist the Plant Area Manager in supervising the department team and allocating daily tasks.
- Support the training and development of staff to ensure company standards are consistently met.
- Help oversee plant care, including watering, pruning, feeding, and general maintenance.
- Lead by example, ensuring work is completed efficiently and safely.
Customer Service
- Welcome and assist customers with plant selection and gardening advice.
- Promote seasonal offers, complementary products, and accessories.
- Record and follow up customer enquiries and special orders using company systems.
- Deliver a consistently high standard of customer service.
Plant Area Presentation
- Assist in creating attractive seasonal displays and merchandising features.
- Ensure products are correctly priced and clearly labelled.
- Maintain a clean, tidy, safe, and well-presented plant area.
- Monitor plant health and ensure stock receives appropriate care at all times.
Stock Management
- Support the Plant Area Manager with pre-season planning and stock selection.
- Assist with placing weekly stock orders and monitoring inventory levels.
- Check incoming deliveries for accuracy and quality.
- Replenish displays and carry out regular stock counts to maintain inventory accuracy.
Key Skills & Knowledge
- Excellent knowledge of plants, gardening, and horticulture.
- Passion for delivering outstanding customer service.
- Confident communicator with the ability to engage with customers.
- Previous supervisory or team leadership experience is desirable.
- Good organisational and time management skills.
- Numerate and accurate with attention to detail.
- Basic computer literacy.
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions and undertake manual handling tasks.
Weekend availability is required. Salary is dependent on experience.
