We are looking for a highly motivated individual to work in our busy Housing Options department.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone with an interest in homelessness, who is looking to build a career in this field. You will work with households who are homeless, supporting them through the housing assessment and relief process and helping to secure suitable accommodation.

The post is avaiable on a 12 month fixed term contract.

Full training, support and ongoing development will be provided.

Interviews will be held at City Hall.

Housing Assessment Officer (Renters Rights Act)

Job Description

The post is focused on addressing the needs of homeless households through the council's statutory duties including those arising from the Renters Rights Act, while increasing access to safe, secure, and sustainable accommodation within the private rented sector (PRS).

A core aim of the role will be working proactively with landlords and tenants to maximise PRS opportunities, ensure compliance with new legal standards, and improve housing outcomes for homeless clients.

Responsibilities

Carry out the assessment of homelessness applications in line with legislation and council procedures
Work with households who are homeless to identify appropriate relief options and next steps
Assist in the delivery of Personalised Housing Plans focused on relieving homelessness
Liaise with accommodation providers, landlords and partner organisations to help secure housing for clients
Work closely with the Council’s Tenancy Relations Adviser, supporting households affected by tenancy disputes, possession action and private rented sector issues linked to renters’ rights
Provide clear, accurate and sensitive information to residents about their housing situation
Prepare correspondence, records and case notes accurately and within required timescales

Skills Required

We would like to hear from you if you would enjoy working with people to help them resolve their housing problems. You must have excellent negotiation skills and the ability to deal sensitively with clients in difficult and often pressurised circumstances. You should be able to produce written work to a consistently high standard and have the ability to understand and apply legislation accurately.

You should be a confident, pro-active and capable individual with a positive attitude and the potential to quickly learn and develop your skills and knowledge in this key role.

Key to success in this role is being able to work constructively and creatively to help clients meet their housing needs. We will provide training as necessary for successful candidates on relevant areas of housing and related law.

Educational Requirements

A degree or relevant experience is required to carry out this role.
