Sleep Advice Service
Cerebra understands that if you have a child that doesn’t sleep, the whole family suffers. Many children with neurological conditions suffer from disrupted sleep. Our sleep advice service provides bespoke advice and support so that everyone can get a good night’s sleep.
Legal Rights Service
Our Legal Rights Service provides help and support to families of children with neurological conditions when they are faced with barriers and difficulties in accessing statutory support services they are entitled to. The service provides information on their legal entitlements.
Book and Toy Library Service
Our specialist postal lending library contains a wide range of books for both adults and children, plus a selection of sensory toys specifically chosen for children with brain conditions.
Innovation and Product Design Service
Our Innovation Service designs and builds bespoke products that cater to the specific needs of children with neurological conditions. therefore, the service is to make products that are desirable and exciting, therefore promoting social inclusion, peer acceptance and enabling the disabled child to participate in everyday activities that are so often closed to them.
Information Products
Cerebra publishes different information products to help families with a child with a neurological condition. Our information products offer comprehensive, up-to-date support and research-driven strategies to assist families with a wide range of issues.
Buzgi and Toy Adaptation Service
Cerebra designs and builds bespoke assistive equipment for disabled children, this includes creating custom mobility aids, switch‑adapted toys, and other innovative solutions to help children access play, learning, and independence.
The Bugzi - a mini powered wheelchair for children offers many children their first experience of independent mobility. It uses either a joystick or switches and adaptable seating for complex needs, and helps develop spatial awareness, confidence, and early mobility skills. The Bugzi is available through a national loan scheme.
Additionally, we operate commercial services (including a web shop) to supplement our income to support children and their families.
Our services are provided to families free of charge.
Purpose of the Role
The Quality Assurance Engineer is responsible for the technical leadership, quality management, and regulatory compliance of all products manufactured, refurbished and supported by the Tadworth operation.
This role will lead the safe and effective delivery of the Bugzi powered wheelchair loan service whilst also providing technical oversight across the wider product portfolio. This includes responsibility for product compliance, quality systems, production support, technical problem solving, product improvement, and workshop operations.
Working closely with operational and service colleagues, the postholder will ensure products are manufactured, refurbished and maintained to the required standards, whilst identifying opportunities to improve product performance, reliability, sustainability and impact for the families Cerebra supports.
The role combines technical leadership with practical hands-on engineering and manufacturing responsibilities. The postholder will be expected to actively participate in the manufacture, refurbishment, modification, testing and validation of products, whilst also leading quality, compliance, and continuous improvement activities.
Key Areas of Responsibility
Technical Leadership
- Act as the technical lead and engineering authority for all products manufactured, refurbished and supported by the Tadworth operation.
- Provide day-to-day technical guidance, problem-solving, and decision-making support to workshop and operational staff.
- Maintain oversight of technical documentation, specifications, product records, and engineering change activities.
- Liaise with suppliers, manufacturers, and external technical partners to support service delivery and product development.
- Contribute technical expertise to strategic planning, service improvement, and the introduction of new products, technologies and manufacturing processes.
Quality and Medical Device Compliance
- Lead the implementation, maintenance, and continuous improvement of the Quality Management System (QMS).
- Ensure products are manufactured, refurbished, and maintained in accordance with applicable quality procedures, medical device regulations and relevant standards.
- Maintain technical files, risk assessments, compliance documentation, and product records.
- Lead investigations into complaints, incidents, non-conformances and corrective actions, ensuring lessons learned are implemented.
- Act as the lead for audits, regulatory compliance, and quality-related activities across the service.
Refurbishment, Production & Workshop Operations
- Lead and actively participate in the manufacture, refurbishment, servicing, modification, testing and validation of Bugzi wheelchairs and other products supported by the Tadworth operation.
- Coordinate workshop activities, production planning and resource allocation to ensure products are delivered safely, efficiently and to the required quality standards.
- Act as the senior technical resource within the workshop, providing practical support, fault diagnosis and technical sign-off where required.
- Manage workshop equipment, tooling, materials and technical suppliers to support service delivery.
- Lead, line manage and develop workshop technical staff, ensuring work is delivered safely, efficiently and to the required quality standards.
Product Support and Continuous Improvement
- Lead field issue investigations, monitor product performance, and identify opportunities to improve safety, reliability, usability, and manufacturability.
- Capture learning from service delivery, refurbishment activities, and family feedback to inform future product development.
- Work closely with the Cerebra Innovation Centre (CIC) Design Team to identify, evaluate and implement product improvements, ensuring operational experience and technical learning are incorporated into future designs.
- Evaluate and support the introduction of new products, technologies, materials and manufacturing processes.
- Contribute to the ongoing development of Bugzi and the wider product portfolio.
Team Leadership and Service Development
- Lead, line manage and develop workshop technical staff, ensuring work is delivered safely, efficiently and to the required quality standards.
- Provide day-to-day leadership, coaching, performance management and technical support to team members, fostering a positive, collaborative and safety-focused working environment.
- Support the recruitment, induction, training and ongoing professional development of technical staff, volunteers and students where appropriate.
- Work collaboratively across Cerebra to support service delivery, continuous improvement activities, service planning, reporting and organisational objectives.
- Maintain professional knowledge through continuing professional development and undertake additional duties appropriate to the role, acting at all times in accordance with Cerebra's policies, procedures and values.
