Full job description

We're looking for a Senior Communications Officer to support a creative and fast-paced communications team through a period of change.

Like many NHS Trusts, NUH will face a series of challenges and opportunities over the coming years, changing in line with the Government’s 10 Year Health Plan and transforming our services to improve the quality of care, support our people, embrace innovation, and become a more sustainable organisation for the future.

Powerful storytelling, along with skillful multi-channel communications plans will be needed to navigate through these challenges and opportunities. We’re looking for a Senior Communications Officer who can help with this, supporting with managing the media, creating informed responses and developing impactful written and video social content.

Key job responsibilities:-

As a Senior Communications Officer you will report to the External Communications Manager, supporting with managing the media enquiries, creating informed responses and developing impactful written and video social content.
Powerful storytelling, along with skilful multi-channel communications plans will be needed to navigate through these challenges and opportunities.
You will also work on the comms on-call rota, which may include some weekend and evening work. You will support with internal communications where required.
You will have the experience and skills to develop relationships with leaders and colleagues at all levels, offering expert advice and providing professional challenge where appropriate.
As a member of the NUH Communications and Engagement team you will have access to communications, graphic design, digital and videography support to help you implement your plans.
As a member of the NUH Communications and Engagement Team you will fulfil all reasonable requests for support on wider communications activity from the Senior Leadership Team.
Provide sound communication and engagement advice to NUH leaders, including highlighting risks and opportunities.
Take part in the delivery of external and internal communication plans to achieve strategic aims set by the Head of External Communications.
Create powerful external narratives and video content to highlight NUH’s strategic aims.
Manage the NUH media inbox when required.
Write media releases and web and social updates.
Support colleagues engaging with the media, including arranging and hosting media engagements.
Be a point of contact for media enquiries, taking a lead from the corporate communications colleagues in response to specific issues, set up interviews, brief appropriate staff and oversee filming.
Effectively evaluate communication and engagement activity to measure impact.
Assist with wider external and communications tasks like inbox and on-call rotas if necessary.
Contribute to the team’s forward planner and quarterly performance reports.
Be proactive in promoting the Trust’s vision and values.
Ensure that good practice is shared and delivered at all levels within the service.
The post holder will be required to make judgements that require analysis and interpretation of extremely complicated situations where internal and external stakeholders/experts may challenge decisions made.
This will also require knowing when to escalate issues for additional support and guidance where appropriate.
To support more junior members of the team on a day-to-day basis.
Maintain and update Professional Portfolio and Professional Development Plan. Undertake courses and other activities to satisfy continuing professional development requirements.
Be able to work independently and manage own workload to make effective use of time and resources and working to local and national standards.
Work flexibly and undertake other duties commensurate to the grade as required.
Ensure at all times that use of resources represent value for money and are properly accounted for.
You will have the option to participate in the out-of-hours on-call rota for media calls and communications support outside of normal working hours, for which there is an additional payment. This may involve attending any hospital/external site at short notice out of hours.
