The Senior Specialist Grade (Associate Specialist) is a full-time position within the George Eliot Hospital Urology Department and will be a urological surgeon with an interest in General Urology. This post will provide a comprehensive general urology outpatient, inpatient, and diagnostic and day case surgery service for urology patients. Those who are skilled in the surgical management of BPH and other core urology work would be particularly welcomed.
An in-house training programme exists for CESR, and the department is very enthusiastic and committed to supporting appropriate and desirous candidates to achieve CESR.
Clinical Practice:
Ensure independent decision making to manage urology inpatients in conjunction with the consultant urologist on call of the week.
Supervise pre-operative preparation and post-operative care for urology patients.
Perform template/mapping biopsies of the prostate.
Perform diagnostics clinics, such as flexible cystoscopy sessions.
Fulfill on-call service commitments as a middle-grade doctor.
Actively participate in regular audit, surgical multidisciplinary team (SMDT), and research meetings. Surgical Skills:
Be able to perform independently and teach registrars core general urological procedures TURP / TURBT / Ureteroscopy / Inguino-scrotal / penile surgery.
Provide guidance and supervision to junior doctors and surgical nurse practitioners.
Collaborate with General Surgical colleagues to ensure emergency care provision as this is done in close partnership with General Surgery
Research and Audit
Actively participate in clinical research, including patient recruitment and data collection.
Contribute to audit projects, evaluating and improving urological services.
Stay updated with current research and advancements in urological treatments.
Participate in research meetings and present findings.

The main role will be to cover the elective theatres and clinics of consultants at an independent level and conduct procedures in Urology Diagnostic and treatment centre supported by the CNS team and Registrars. There will be a 1:4 on call commitment which will be at middle grade level to support the consultants. If needed from a service level, and as per competencies of the candidate, there will be opportunity to “Act Up” as a consultant, in which situation the selected person could part of the on-call consultant rota. This will help in career progression to achieve CESR and consultant level status after undergoing through a formal selection process.
