2 months contract with a Local Authority

Job Title: HGV Driver

Job Purpose

To safely operate refuse collection vehicles and support the efficient collection of waste and recycling services. The post holder will work alongside a loader, assisting with loading duties where required, ensuring all collections are completed safely, efficiently, and within agreed timescales.

The role requires a flexible and reliable individual with excellent driving skills, route-planning abilities, and strong interpersonal skills to work effectively within a small, established team of drivers and loaders.

Key Responsibilities

Waste Collection Operations

Operate refuse collection vehicles safely and efficiently in accordance with road traffic legislation and company procedures.
Complete scheduled waste and recycling collections across designated routes.
Assist loaders with waste collection and loading activities as required.
Ensure all collections are completed daily and to the required service standards.
Plot and manage collection routes effectively to maximise efficiency and ensure timely completion of rounds.

Team Working

Work collaboratively with loaders and fellow drivers to deliver an effective waste collection service.
Communicate effectively with team members throughout the working day.
Contribute positively to a small, well-established team environment.
Demonstrate professionalism and maintain good working relationships with colleagues and members of the public.

Health & Safety

Adhere to all health and safety regulations, procedures, and safe working practices.
Undertake manual handling activities safely and correctly.
Carry out daily vehicle checks and report defects promptly.
Ensure the vehicle and equipment are operated safely at all times.
Report accidents, incidents, hazards, or near misses in accordance with company procedures.

Customer Service

Provide a professional and courteous service when interacting with residents and members of the public.
Represent the organisation positively at all times.
Respond appropriately to routine service-related queries.

Flexibility and Performance

Be prepared to work beyond the contracted finish time of 2:00 pm where operational requirements dictate and to ensure all collections are completed.
Assist with additional duties associated with waste collection services as required.
Maintain high levels of attendance, punctuality, and productivity.

Experience

Essential

Experience driving large commercial vehicles.
Experience working within a team environment.
Experience working in physically demanding roles.
Ability to plan and follow collection routes efficiently.

Desirable

Previous dustcart/refuse collection driving experience.
Experience working for a Local Authority.
Experience working within a waste management or environmental services company.
Experience assisting with waste loading and collection duties.
Experience operating within public-facing service environments.

Qualifications

Essential

Valid Category C (Class 2) HGV Driving Licence.
Valid Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC).
Valid Digital Tachograph Card.

Desirable

Manual Handling qualification or training.
Driver Assistance/Driver Mate experience or training.
Health and Safety related training.

Skills and Knowledge

Ability to safely operate refuse collection vehicles.
Good knowledge of road safety and transport regulations.
Ability to assist with manual loading duties.
Strong route-planning and organisational skills.
Good communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to work effectively within a small team.

Knowledge of waste collection processes and industry best practice.
Understanding of local authority waste collection operations.

Interview Information

Interviews will take place at Unit 4, Sandgate Industrial Estate, 57 Sandgate Street, Southwark, Surrey, SE15 1LE, United Kingdom.
Interviews are expected to last no longer than 30 minutes.
Candidates must bring their:
- Driving Licence
- Driver CPC Card
- Digital Tachograph Card

for physical inspection during the interview.

Failure to provide the required driver documentation may impact progression in the recruitment process.

Additional Information

Hours: 20 hours per week
Pay Rate: £24.15 per hour (UMB)
Work Location: Unit 4, Sandgate Industrial Estate, 57 Sandgate Street, Southwark, Surrey, SE15 1LE, United Kingdom
Drivers will work alongside a loader as part of the waste collection crew.
Drivers are expected to assist with loading duties when required.
Manual Handling training will be provided.
Driver Assistance training can be provided where necessary.
The role involves working outdoors in all weather conditions.
Candidates must be prepared to work flexibly and beyond the contracted finish time of 2:00 pm to ensure all collections are completed.
The successful candidate must have the interpersonal skills necessary to work effectively within a small, established team of drivers and loaders.
Payment: Bi-weekly payment schedule
Start Date: Immediate start available
