Full job description

This is a temporary post for a 24 month period

Are you highly organised, confident dealing with people and looking for a role where no two days are the same? This is a great opportunity for someone with a strong administrative or regulatory background or keen to build a career within local government and planning.

We are looking for a motivated and detail‑focused individual to join our friendly and supportive Planning Team. Previous planning experience is not essential – what matters most is your ability to manage information, communicate clearly and work methodically in a busy environment.

As a Planning Enforcement Officer, you’ll help ensure that development across Fenland is carried out appropriately and in line with agreed permissions. The role involves investigating reports of potential breaches of planning control, maintaining accurate case records, corresponding with residents and businesses, and supporting proportionate, fair outcomes.

You’ll regularly:

Manage and track cases using electronic systems
Handle correspondence, enquiries and documentation
Gather and organise information from a range of sources
Carry out site visits (with training and support provided)
Work with colleagues, customers and external partners to resolve issues

This role suits someone who enjoys problem‑solving, structured casework and customer contact, and who takes pride in keeping clear, accurate records.

What we’re looking for:

You do not need previous planning enforcement or council experience. We’re particularly keen to hear from applicants who can demonstrate:

Strong administrative and organisational skills
Confidence communicating with a wide range of people
Attention to detail and the ability to manage competing priorities
A professional, calm and fair approach to sensitive situations
Willingness to learn and develop new knowledge

Full training will be provided, and you’ll be supported to gradually build your understanding of planning legislation and procedures.

Enforcement sits within the Council’s Planning Service, which values teamwork, support and shared problem‑solving. You’ll work closely with other council services and external organisations as part of a collaborative “One Team” approach.

Fenland is a rural district in north Cambridgeshire, known for its open landscapes and four market towns. Our offices are based in March, just a five‑minute walk from the railway station, with excellent links to Cambridge, London and beyond, and relatively affordable housing.
