Full job description

Purpose of the Role

The English Tutor will contribute to the delivery of high-quality teaching and learning within NewHeart Learning, a developing Alternative Provision supporting pupils with SEMH needs, emotionally based school avoidance, and those out of education. The postholder will help establish a nurturing, relational, and aspirational environment in which learners can rebuild confidence, re-engage with education, and make strong academic and personal progress.

Key Responsibilities

Teaching & Learning

Plan and deliver creative, engaging, and differentiated English lessons across Key Stages 3 and 4, typically in groups of 5–8 learners.
Support students in working towards AQA Unit Awards, GCSE pathways, and other accredited programmes.
Develop innovative strategies to engage reluctant learners and promote a love of reading, writing, and communication.
Deliver targeted interventions to address gaps in learning, improve literacy skills, and build confidence.
Adapt teaching methods and resources to meet a wide range of needs, including SEMH, SEND, and low prior attainment.
Create a positive, safe, and inclusive classroom culture rooted in therapeutic approaches and consistency.

Assessment & Progress

Assess, record, and monitor pupil progress in line with school policies.
Provide high-quality feedback to pupils to support progress and motivation.
Contribute to progress reviews, reporting, and multi-agency planning where appropriate.
Use data and observation to inform personalised planning and targeted support.

Pastoral & SEMH Support

Build strong, trusting relationships with pupils based on empathy, respect, and high expectations.
Contribute to the pastoral development of learners, helping them regulate emotions, improve attendance, and increase engagement.
Work collaboratively with colleagues, parents/carers, and external professionals to support holistic outcomes.
Model and uphold the school’s values, therapeutic ethos, and trauma-informed approaches to behaviour.

Wider Contribution

Contribute to the design and development of a new and evolving English curriculum.
Support enrichment activities that promote creativity, communication, resilience, and life skills.
Engage fully in CPD and reflective practice to enhance professional expertise.
Participate in the wider life of the school, supporting the founding team in shaping a thriving, values-driven provision.
Champion safeguarding, equality, diversity, and inclusion across all aspects of the role.

Person Specification

Essential Criteria

Experience in teaching English at KS3 and KS4 in innovative and engaging ways.
Experience working with pupils with additional needs or a commitment to developing skills in this area.
Ability to differentiate and personalise learning to meet diverse needs.
Excellent communication, interpersonal, and teamwork skills.
A nurturing, compassionate approach with high levels of resilience and flexibility.
Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.

Desirable Criteria

Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or QTLS preferred.
Experience working in Alternative Provision, PRUs, SEMH schools, or specialist settings.
Experience delivering AQA Unit Awards, literacy interventions, or functional skills pathways.
Training or CPD in SEMH, SEND, trauma-informed practice, or behaviour management.
Experience in curriculum development or supporting the growth of a new educational setting.
