An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced and motivated Band 7 Infant Feeding Clinical Advisor (Triage) to lead the delivery of a new Maternity Neonatal Triage service at West Middlesex Hospital.
This newly established, externally funded role has been created as part of the North West London Health Inequalities Transformation (HIT) Programme to improve the care of babies under 28 days of age presenting with feeding concerns, jaundice, weight loss, vomiting and other neonatal issues. The post holder will provide expert telephone and face-to-face clinical triage, ensuring babies and their families receive the right care, in the right place, at the right time.
Working autonomously within an innovative nurse/midwife-led service, you will provide advanced clinical assessment, specialist infant feeding support and clinical decision-making, ensuring babies are safely managed within community, maternity or paediatric services as appropriate. The role will contribute to reducing unnecessary attendances within the Paediatric Emergency Department, improving patient experience and strengthening integrated working across maternity, neonatal, paediatric and community services.
This is an exciting opportunity to shape and develop a new service, influence clinical pathways, lead service improvement initiatives and contribute to the ongoing evaluation of an innovative model of care with the potential for wider implementation across North West London.
The post holder will act as the clinical lead for the Maternity Neonatal Triage service, delivering expert assessment and management of babies under 28 days presenting with infant feeding and neonatal concerns.
Working collaboratively with maternity, neonatal, paediatric, emergency department and community teams, the post holder will undertake comprehensive telephone and face-to-face assessments, formulate evidence-based management plans and ensure timely escalation of babies requiring medical review.
As the Trust’s specialist practitioner for this service, the successful candidate will provide expert infant feeding advice, promote breastfeeding and safe formula feeding, support positive parent-infant relationships and facilitate effective discharge planning and onward referral to community services.
The role will also provide clinical leadership through staff education, audit, quality improvement, governance and service development activities. The post holder will contribute to pathway redesign, collect and analyse service data, evaluate outcomes and support the Trust’s Baby Friendly Initiative standards whilst working closely with system partners to improve neonatal care across organisational boundaries.

The Infant Feeding Clinical Advisor (Triage) will provide advanced autonomous clinical practice within the Maternity Neonatal Triage service, undertaking expert assessment, triage and management of babies under 28 days presenting with feeding concerns, jaundice, weight loss, vomiting and other neonatal conditions.
The post holder will deliver both telephone and face-to-face clinical assessments, using advanced clinical judgement to determine the most appropriate care pathway and ensuring babies receive timely intervention within maternity, community or paediatric services. They will act as the lead practitioner for infant feeding within the service, providing specialist advice to families and healthcare professionals whilst promoting breastfeeding, safe formula feeding and positive parent-baby relationships.
Working across organisational boundaries, the post holder will establish strong collaborative relationships with maternity, neonatal, paediatric, emergency department, health visiting, primary care and community teams to support seamless care and reduce avoidable hospital attendances.
The successful candidate will provide professional leadership through education, supervision and support of the multidisciplinary team, promoting evidence-based practice and contributing to the continuous development of staff knowledge and competence in infant feeding and neonatal assessment.
The role will have a significant focus on service development, governance and quality improvement, including audit, data collection, evaluation of outcomes, pathway redesign and implementation of service improvements. The post holder will contribute to the Trust’s Baby Friendly Initiative standards, support clinical governance processes and ensure practice remains compliant with national guidance, professional standards and Trust policies.
This is an autonomous, specialist role requiring excellent communication, advanced clinical assessment skills and the ability to work effectively across multiple teams to improve outcomes and experience for babies and their families.
