Job Purpose
To lead and coordinate the day-to-day activities of the Street Services driver and crew team, ensuring that all operational duties are organised, communicated and completed safely, efficiently and to the required standards.
The postholder will provide effective supervision and support to drivers and crew members, acting as a key link between the transport office and operational teams. This includes coordinating the daily start-up of operations, issuing vehicle keys and work instructions from 06:00, managing the return and debrief of crews, and undertaking a range of administrative and transport office duties.
- Lead, supervise and support a team of drivers and crew members, ensuring that staff are appropriately deployed and have clear instructions for their daily duties.
- Coordinate the start of the working day, including issuing vehicle keys and relevant information to drivers from 06:00.
- Relay daily operational instructions, changes, priorities and service requirements to drivers and crew members.
- Ensure crews understand their allocated work, routes, duties and any specific instructions or operational requirements.
- Monitor the progress of daily operations and respond promptly to issues, delays, staff queries or changes in operational requirements.
- Conduct driver and crew debriefs on their return, gathering information regarding completed work, issues encountered, vehicle defects, incidents and outstanding matters.
- Ensure relevant information from daily debriefs is accurately recorded and communicated to the appropriate colleagues or managers.
- Assist with the effective management of vehicle keys, documentation, paperwork and other transport office records.
- Undertake a variety of administrative and office-based tasks to support the effective running of Street Services operations.
- Maintain effective communication with drivers, crew members, managers and other service areas.
- Support the implementation of health and safety procedures, operational policies and service standards.
- Identify and report operational, staffing, vehicle or service issues and assist in resolving them where appropriate.
- Support the management team with the allocation and coordination of staff and vehicles to meet daily service requirements.
- Ensure confidentiality, accuracy and professionalism when dealing with operational and staff information.
- Promote a positive, respectful and customer-focused working environment.
- Undertake any other reasonable duties commensurate with the grade and responsibilities of the post.
- Experience of supervising, leading or coordinating a team within a busy operational environment.
- Experience of working in a transport, waste, street services, logistics or similar operational setting.
- Ability to organise and prioritise work effectively in a busy office environment.
- Ability to communicate clear instructions to drivers, crew members and colleagues.
- Ability to remain calm and make effective decisions when dealing with changing operational demands and unexpected issues.
- Good administrative and organisational skills, with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
- Ability to maintain accurate records and complete operational documentation.
- Good verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to use standard office IT systems and equipment.
- Understanding of the importance of health and safety within an operational environment.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team while providing clear leadership and direction.
- Ability to build positive working relationships with staff at all levels.
- Willingness to work early mornings and within the operational requirements of the service.
- Experience of working within local authority Street Services, waste collection or similar public service operations.
- Experience of transport coordination, fleet operations or a transport office environment.
- Knowledge of waste collection and/or recycling operations, including Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) activities.
- Experience of carrying out driver or crew briefings and debriefs.
- Knowledge of relevant workplace health and safety requirements.
- Experience of using transport, workforce management or fleet management systems.
