Learning Support Assistant and Cover Supervisor

Location: Cardiff site, with occasional cover required at Barry, Tonteg or Porth
Hours: 2 days per week, 09:30am–2:30pm Mondays and Tuesdays
Contract: Part-time
Rate of Pay: £13.00 per hour for Learning Support Assistant duties. A supervisor uplift will be paid for any hours where the staff member is required to supervise the class in the tutor’s absence or provide cover supervision at another SEND Academy site.
Driving Licence: Essential due to occasional cover across other sites

About the Role

SEND Academy is looking for a reliable, caring and enthusiastic Learning Support Assistant and Cover Supervisor to support adults with learning disabilities at our Cardiff site.

The successful candidate will work alongside the classroom tutor to support learners with their maths, literacy and personal development activities. They will also be required to supervise the class when the main classroom tutor is absent. All lessons and resources will be prepared in advance, so no lesson planning is required.

There may also be occasions where the successful candidate is asked to provide ad hoc cover at our other sites, including Barry, Tonteg or Porth. These hours may fall on different days and will be arranged in advance where possible.

Key Responsibilities

The role will include:

Supporting adults with learning disabilities to complete maths, literacy and classroom-based activities.
Supervising the class when the main classroom tutor is absent.
Delivering pre-prepared lessons and activities in a calm, confident and supportive manner.
Helping to set up the classroom before learners arrive.
Supporting learners with worksheets, online learning, quizzes, games and fun group activities.
Encouraging learners to participate, make choices and build confidence.
Assisting learners with teas, coffees and general classroom routines.
Helping to maintain a positive, safe and welcoming learning environment.
Supporting learners with appropriate communication, behaviour and engagement strategies.
Helping with the general organisation, tidying and shut down of the classroom at the end of the session.
Reporting any concerns, incidents or safeguarding matters to the appropriate person.
Providing occasional cover at other SEND Academy sites when required.

Person Specification

The successful candidate must have:

Previous experience working in education, care, support work, or with adults/young people with learning disabilities or additional learning needs.
Experience supporting learners or individuals in a structured setting.
A kind, patient and supportive approach.
The confidence to supervise a small class when required.
Good communication skills.
The ability to encourage learners in a positive and respectful way.
Basic confidence with maths, literacy and classroom-based learning activities.
The ability to follow prepared lesson plans and instructions.
Good organisation and timekeeping.
A flexible approach to work, including occasional cover at other sites.
A full driving licence and access to transport.

Desirable Skills

It would be beneficial, but not essential, for the candidate to have:

Knowledge of safeguarding adults.
Experience supporting learners with autism, learning disabilities or communication needs.
First aid training.
Food hygiene awareness.
Experience leading quizzes, group activities or social sessions.
