We are looking for an Accessibility Specialist to join HMRCs Internal Accessibility Centre of Excellence (CoE) at Senior Officer grade. In this role, you will provide specialist accessibility consultancy, guidance and assurance to help teams design, build and deliver accessible services, products and content for colleagues.

You will act as a trusted accessibility advisor, working with service teams, product managers, designers, developers, architects and senior stakeholders to embed accessibility into governance, delivery and decision-making. You will use your expertise to influence outcomes, identify risks, recommend practical improvements and support teams to meet legal and departmental accessibility obligations.

The role combines accessibility expertise, consultancy, stakeholder engagement and continuous improvement. You will help shape accessible approaches across HMRC, support the adoption of assistive technology and inclusive practices, and build accessibility capability across multidisciplinary teams.

Job description

As an Accessibility Specialist, you will provide expert consultancy and practical support to teams across HMRC so that accessibility is considered from the earliest stages of design through to delivery and continuous improvement. You will work across a varied portfolio of services, products, documents and internal tools, helping teams understand what good accessibility looks like and how to achieve it.

You will assess accessibility risks, advise on standards and legislation, and support teams to make informed decisions that improve usability and inclusion for disabled users. This will include consultancy on service design, content, technical implementation, testing approaches, governance and assurance.

You will also contribute to the development of accessibility capability across the organisation by coaching colleagues, facilitating workshops, sharing good practice and helping to improve repeatable approaches, guidance and standards. A key part of the role will be supporting the evaluation and adoption of assistive technology and inclusive solutions, working with users, suppliers and internal stakeholders to ensure they are effective and fit for purpose.

You will need to be confident working in multidisciplinary environments, translating complex accessibility issues into clear advice and building strong working relationships that help teams deliver accessible outcomes at pace.

Stakeholder engagement, consultancy and capability building.

Build effective relationships with stakeholders across HMRC and with external partners, acting as a trusted accessibility specialist.

Influence decisions by explaining complex accessibility issues clearly and offering practical, evidence-based recommendations.

Facilitate workshops, reviews and discussions that help multidisciplinary teams align on user needs, priorities and accessible outcomes.

Coach and supporting colleagues to improve accessibility knowledge, confidence and practice across the organisation.

Contribute to the development of standards, guidance, communities of practice and continuous improvement within the Accessibility CoE.

Please note: This role requires travel and over-night stays across the UK.

Essential criteria: You will be able to demonstrate and show your experience:

Ability to assess issues and risks, explain their impact clearly and recommend proportionate, practical solutions.

Knowledge of assistive technologies or technology adoption, including understanding user needs and implementation considerations.

Excellent demonstrable experience of working with Agile delivery.

Understanding of how procurement or commercial processes support technology adoption, particularly in regulated environments.

Excellent communication, facilitation and stakeholder management skills, including the ability to challenge constructively and lead decision making within a team.

Hybrid working at HMRC
