The role is positioned within Casualty business unit, which deals with motor litigation exception matters up to £100k in value and offers opportunities to progress into full file handling roles.
The role of a File Handler Assistant is to support file handlers manage their caseload of Fast, Intermediate and Multi Track cases on behalf of key insurer clients, from the issue of proceedings through to Trial. Supervision and support will be provided in the role as part of our competency development framework.
There may also be a selection of non-litigated litigated cases if they fall into the appropriate remit.
All claims would be handled on behalf of the Defendant.
The role would suit either an established pre-litigation Casualty handler looking to move into litigation or junior litigator looking to progress into personal injury litigation enhancing their wider competency with a view to moving into litigating file handling.
Due to the nature of the work being handled the candidate should be able to demonstrate an ability to impress the client with the extent of their legal knowledge and provide clear unambiguous advice on the strategy for bringing a claim to its resolution
Duties on the Assistant File Handler’s own caseload:
- Considering and responding to Applications for Pre-action disclosure
- Handling matters in accordance with client SLA’s
- Instructing Counsel/advocate
- Reviewing evidence
- Legal Research
- Negotiations/ Drafting Payments into Court
- Dealing with routine correspondence
- Initial review and setting strategy for the management of the claim
- Reviewing matters throughout

Duties as an Assistant to File Handlers in the team
- Dealing with disclosure
- Reviewing evidence (including medical / personnel records)
- Conducting investigations with Insured’s / obtaining witness statements
- Liaising with parties involved in claims including the insured, Claimant Solicitors and witnesses
- Instructing Counsel / Experts
- Attending conferences and Trials with Counsel and note taking
- Dealing with routine correspondence
- Reviewing quantum
- Drafting Tomlin Orders and Consent Orders
- Draft Cost schedules
- Dealing with general or straightforward queries
- Telephone chasing activities
- Filing out Allocation Questionnaires and witness summon
