Freelance Counsellor / Therapist (Substance Misuse & Recovery)

Contract Type: Freelance / Part-Time
Hours: 16 hours per week
Rate: £25 per hour

We provide trauma-informed and culturally responsive services, with a focus on reducing health inequalities and supporting ethnically diverse communities affected by substance misuse.

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced and culturally responsive Counsellor / Therapist to join our team in Birmingham.

This in-person role involves delivering one-to-one counselling and group-based therapeutic support for adults aged 18+ who are recovering from substance misuse.

You will support clients to address the emotional, psychological, and behavioural factors linked to addiction, promoting long-term recovery, resilience, and wellbeing.

Key Responsibilities

Deliver one-to-one counselling for adults in recovery from substance misuse
Facilitate group therapy sessions, recovery groups, and psychoeducational workshops
Conduct assessments and develop personalised recovery and care plans
Use evidence-based approaches including CBT, Motivational Interviewing, and trauma-informed practice
Monitor progress and evaluate therapeutic outcomes
Maintain accurate and confidential client records
Work collaboratively with recovery workers, peer mentors, and external agencies
Contribute to multidisciplinary case discussions and service development
Uphold safeguarding and risk management procedures at all times

Essential Requirements

Diploma, Degree or equivalent in Counselling, Psychotherapy, Psychology, CBT, or related field
Registered or working towards accreditation (BACP, BABCP, UKCP, NCPS or equivalent)
Experience working with substance misuse, addiction, recovery, or dual diagnosis
Experience delivering CBT or structured therapeutic interventions
Strong understanding of trauma-informed and culturally responsive practice
Experience working with ethnically diverse communities
Strong communication and group facilitation skills
Enhanced DBS (or willingness to obtain)

Desirable Experience

Experience in community, voluntary sector, or recovery services
Training in trauma-informed care, relapse prevention, or motivational interviewing
Knowledge of Birmingham and West Midlands recovery pathways
Experience supporting complex needs and co-occurring mental health issues
