Pendre Surgery is a thriving GMS Practice situated in Holywell, Flintshire, North Wales. We are the only Investors in People (IIP) accredited GP Practice in North Wales and were shortlisted for the UK company of the year 2022 award.
We have just over 10,800 patients registered at the Surgery and have 4 GP Partners who provide personalised patient care and who are supported by 2 salaried doctors, 3 advanced nurse practitioners, 3 practice nurses, 2 healthcare assistants as well as a skilled dispensing team.
We are looking to recruit a phlebotomist/health care assistant to join our well established, friendly and very busy practice.
The post involves taking blood from patients as requested. Ideally you will have experience of the clinical environment and the delivery of hands-on care. You must have good people, communication and IT skills. The ability to work as part of the bigger team whilst using your own initiative is essential. If successful, you will find the job interesting as well as challenging at times. The successful candidate will be supported by the Senior Lead Nurse and other members of the nursing team. The post is for 18 hours per week - Wed 8am-12pm, Thurs/Fri 8am-4pm
You must be self-motivated, conscientious, professional, enthusiastic and able to use your own initiative.
The successful candidate must be an active team player and be very flexible to work within a team.
Salary – Band 2-4 dependent on experience

Job summary:
Working under the direct supervision of the senior practice nurse and strictly in accordance with specific practice guidelines and protocols, the post-holder will be responsible for performing venepuncture to obtain blood samples from patients only as the result of a direct referral from a GP or nurse practitioner. To take blood pressures, 24hr blood pressure monitoring, ECG’s, weight management, mental health screenings, 8 week baby checks and administration of flu, B12 and shingles injections.
Duties and responsibilities:
· Ensuring that the patient is as comfortable and relaxed as possible and confirming their agreement to the collection of a blood sample
· Collection of sample(s)s of blood in accordance with training and procedures
· Ensuring samples are stored in appropriate containers
· Accurate, legible labelling of all samples to confirm patient identity
· Checking patient identification against GP/nurse request and confirming with patient whenever possible
· Recording collection of blood sample in patient record in accordance with practice procedure
· Ensuring that samples are dispatched to the appropriate laboratories in a timely fashion.
· Ensuring that anomalies are reported to a senior member of staff
· Notifying the GP/nurse of any significant patient issues
· Liaising with and assisting members of the administrative team

- work effectively within the nursing team and along side the reception/admin team and medical team
Standard Maintenance
- Report any clinical or environmental issues of concern and take action to rectify these where appropriate
- Ensure a working knowledge and compliance with Practice Policies and Procedures
- Check and record fridge temperatures to maintain the cold chain
- Check and re-stock GP rooms regularly
- Understand the importance and adhere to infection and control issues
- Keep clinical areas clean and free from clutter
Information Technology
- Input information into the clinical system as appropriate following appropriate training
- Demonstrate a working knowledge of the Practice Policy on information governance
