Overview
Are you interested in railway level crossing systems and access points and the positive impact it can have on the overall safety and performance of the railway system.
If so, there is an exciting opportunity to join us in a role that is vital in supporting improvements in lineside asset management on Wales and Borders Route. We are looking for an Asset Engineer to join our lineside Engineering and Asset Management team. The team are responsible for ensuring the safety and functionality of a varied asset portfolio across the length and breadth of the Wales and Borders Route. The successful individual will be expected to work in a collaborative manner with both internal and external stakeholders whilst promoting the importance of systems thinking.
The role will include using data, embracing technology and working with datasets to ensure accurate and reliable data is available, to drive optimal decisions within asset management.
You will support the lineside asset management processes including inspection, maintenance and renewals in accordance with functional policy and standards to deliver a safe and reliable railway for our customers. Continuous professional development is a constant focus in the team and membership of a relevant professional relevant engineering institution is essential.
We are looking for proactive, ambitious individual with a desire to develop themselves and help in delivering a safe and efficient railway. Civil engineering experience is essential, including drainage which would be advantageous, as would strong communication and numerical skills alongside a flexible and enthusiastic approach to working within a busy team. Personal Track Safety (AC) will be a requirement for the role but not essential at the application stage. Further track safety competencies including COSS and Site Warden would be encouraged for the successful applicant.
Full UK driving licence is essential, the role will involve travel and overnight stays
HNC or HND in a relevant engineering discipline is essential or a commitment to work towards such qualifications.
Your Main Responsibilities will be to
- Provide Lineside systems engineering support to the determination of appropriate engineering maintenance regimes and activity volumes for Lineside assets in accordance with company policies, standards, and specifications. Providing necessary assistance to determine compliance with suitability and robustness of maintenance regimes.
- Provide a comprehensive system engineering support service across the Lineside asset base throughout the route and across delivery units as and when required. Monitor and strive to improve the technical competence of engineers & operatives associated with Lineside activities in the delivery units in line with (NR/L2/CIV/1000/01).
- Provide technical briefings associated with Lineside engineering to engineers in delivery units in order that the purpose, as well as the content of standards, specification, etc. is understood.
- Review and make recommendations on derogation and non-compliance applications to Lineside systems engineering related standards.
- Carry out assurance of asset condition inspections that will inform the Lineside asset condition database and approve TEFs for the renewals work bank. Support initiatives, as directed, to improve processes, data quality, effectiveness of delivery and strategy.
- Support the development of route specific plans including all maintenance and renewal activities and asset strategies, providing the prioritised investment work bank. Support the inclusion of all investment items into appropriate programmes and track through to completion including approval of programme changes.
- Participate in Lineside engineering activities in support of assurance processes including maintenance audit programmes and engineering verifications.
- Monitor the reliability and performance of Lineside systems related assets across the route and instigate, participate in the implementation of corrective actions to improve as required.
- Contribute to the development and maintenance of route asset management plans.
- Participate in investigations and learnings of incidents as required.
- Assist in the review and acceptance process for engineering project designs as and when required.
- Liaise with community relations to support the resolution of certain lineside issues impacting on neighbours and third parties.
- Proactively improve Lineside asset data including management of this data, trend analysis and extracting value, embracing new technology and tools coming on line.

Salary: This role is a 4 C: £43,588 - £53, 167 per annum.
