Milestone is looking for a Junior / Assistant Quantity Surveyor to join our commercial team, working on a long-term social housing disrepair contract.
This is a great opportunity for someone with around 1–2 years’ quantity surveying or commercial experience, or someone currently studying quantity surveying or a construction-related course who is looking to develop within a busy, practical and fast-moving construction environment.
The role will be based from our Barnet Head Office and will support the commercial delivery of a high-volume disrepair workstream for Haringey Council, working closely with an experienced Quantity Surveyor and a strong operational team.
The contract involves a large number of low to mid-value construction works, typically ranging from £2,000 to £15,000 per order, with an annual value of approximately £1.5m. This gives the successful candidate excellent exposure to real construction works, legal disrepair cases, client engagement, subcontractor management, valuations and NHF Schedule pricing.
This is not just an admin role. The successful candidate will be involved in the day-to-day commercial running of the workstream, with support, training and supervision provided. There is a clear opportunity to grow into a more independent Quantity Surveyor role over time.
The Role
The Junior / Assistant Quantity Surveyor will support the commercial management of a busy social housing disrepair contract, including pricing, valuations, subcontractor applications and work order agreement.
Key duties will include:
- Pricing works using the NHF Schedule of Rates
- Preparing and managing pricing schedules in Excel
- Reviewing validation reports from the operational team and converting these into priced works
- Agreeing work order values with the client
- Preparing and supporting client valuations
- Reviewing subcontractor applications and payment submissions
- Supporting variation pricing and commercial change control
- Maintaining accurate commercial records and trackers
- Liaising with the operational team, supervisors, subcontractors and client representatives
- Supporting the QS with monthly valuations, reporting and contract administration
- Assisting with the commercial management of legal disrepair cases
- Helping ensure works are priced, valued and agreed correctly and promptly
- Building knowledge of social housing, disrepair, NHF Schedule pricing and high-volume construction workstreams
About You

- Good Excel ability and confidence working with schedules, trackers and pricing sheets
- Strong attention to detail
- Good communication skills and confidence dealing with internal and external teams
- A proactive attitude and willingness to take ownership of day-to-day tasks
- The ability to work in a busy environment with support from the QS and operational team
- An interest in developing into a more independent QS role over time
Experience with the NHF Schedule of Rates, social housing, disrepair, responsive repairs or planned works would be beneficial, but is not essential. Full support and training will be provided.
A relevant qualification, degree, HNC/HND or current study in quantity surveying, commercial management or construction would be beneficial, but is not essential. We are equally interested in someone with the right attitude, work ethic and ability to learn.
