What if the next generation of epigenetic diagnostics ran on infrastructure you designed?
Tagomics is a Cambridge-based biotechnology company developing a next-generation multi-omic biomarker discovery platform to transform how disease and drug safety are understood, measured, and monitored.
Originating from pioneering research by Dr Robert Neely and colleagues at the University of Birmingham, our proprietary technology integrates genetic, epigenetic, and fragmentomic features from circulating cell-free DNA. Combined with advanced bioinformatics and machine learning, this enables deep biological insight across applications ranging from early cancer detection to drug safety and organ health monitoring. We have the science, the funding, and the momentum, and we're now building the production-grade engineering platform for our first products. To achieve this, we are expanding our multidisciplinary team at Babraham Research Campus, one of Europe's leading life-science hubs.

The Role
This is the hands-on senior engineering position in our Computational Technology team, reporting to the Director of Computational Technology. You'll be the engineering authority in the room, leading a small team of 2–3 engineers, setting direction, making the hard calls, and ensuring what we build is robust, scalable, and genuinely production-ready infrastructure that underpins our diagnostic platform. You will be the interface that takes product requirements and shapes these into an achievable engineering roadmap.
This isn't a pure management role. You'll be hands-on: designing and developing scientific software, architecting cloud infrastructure on AWS, and championing engineering best practice across the team. It's a role for someone who is as comfortable whiteboarding a cloud architecture as they are reviewing a pull request or mentoring an engineer through a tricky problem. You'll lead a team of engineers, collaborate closely with bioinformaticians, ML scientists, and wet-lab teams, and have a direct line of influence on our long-term platform strategy.
This is a rare opportunity to own the engineering foundation of a diagnostic platform from an early stage, with the scientific credibility, funding, and team to actually deliver it.
What You'll Be Doing
- Owning the design, development, and production readiness of our NGS and epigenetics analysis pipelines and cloud infrastructure
- Building and maintaining secure, scalable AWS environments using modern DevOps practice (CI/CD, Infrastructure as Code, containerisation)
- Setting engineering standards across the team: code quality, documentation, testing, reproducibility
- Line managing and mentoring a team of 2–3 engineers
- Translating scientific requirements into robust, maintainable engineering solutions
- Contributing meaningfully to long-term computational platform strategy and technology choices
What We're Looking For
Essential:
- Strong experience supporting NGS data analysis pipelines
- Proficiency in Python and Linux/Unix environments
- Proven AWS experience, including Infrastructure as Code and cloud security practices
- Solid DevOps foundations: CI/CD, Docker, Git
- Workflow management experience (Nextflow, Snakemake, WDL, CWL)
- A genuine track record of technical leadership and mentoring
Desirable:
- Experience in regulated environments such as medical devices or clinical datasets
- HPC and parallel computing
- Awareness of cloud security best practices
A degree in computer science, bioinformatics, software engineering, or a related discipline is expected, though equivalent experience will be considered.
Our Hiring Process
- Online screening call - a conversation about your experience, goals, and questions about the role
- Online technical interview - subject matter questions, a short presentation on a take-home infrastructure design challenge
- In-person team interview - meet with leadership and your future colleagues
What We Offer
- Competitive salary
- Share option scheme
- Matched pension contributions up to 8%
- Private healthcare
- Performance-related bonus scheme
- Flexible hybrid working (minimum 2 days per week on-site)
We're based at Babraham Research Campus, one of Europe's leading life-science hubs, with modern accessible offices, on-site parking, a gym, restaurant, and a pub within easy reach of the countryside.
Joining at this stage genuine influence - over technology choices, engineering culture, and the direction of a company at a pivotal stage of growth.
