We are seeking an experienced Workshop-Based Service Engineer to join our team at a leading construction equipment dealership. The successful candidate will be responsible for the inspection, servicing, maintenance, and repair of a wide range of construction machinery, from 1-tonne mini excavators to 80-tonne heavy equipment.
Further to the above this role will require leadership of current PDI engineer and yardman and working with the Service Manager to provide technical support.
Key Responsibilities
- Responsible for safe working practices, special tools, lifting gear, access equipment, daily checks and yard tidiness.
- Carry out routine servicing, maintenance, and repairs on construction equipment within the workshop
- Diagnose mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic faults efficiently and accurately
- Work on a wide range of machinery including excavators, loaders, dumpers, and other heavy plant (1T–80T)
- Complete detailed job reports, service records, and inspection documentation
- Ensure all work is carried out in accordance with manufacturer specifications and company standards
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organised workshop environment
- Liaise with parts and service departments to ensure timely job completion
- Conduct ACR’s and pre-delivery inspections (PDI) on new & used equipment
- Adhere to all health and safety regulations and company policies
Requirements
- Proven experience as a Service Engineer, or similar role within the construction or heavy equipment industry
- Hands-on experience working with machinery ranging from 1 tonne to 80 tonnes
- Strong knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, and electrical systems
- Ability to read and interpret technical manuals and schematics
- Relevant qualifications in plant maintenance, mechanical engineering, or similar (e.g., NVQ Level 2/3 or equivalent)
- Good problem-solving skills and attention to detail
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Basic IT skills for reporting and diagnostics
Desirable Skills
- Experience with leading equipment brands (e.g., Develon, CAT, JCB, Komatsu, Volvo)
- Manufacturer training certifications
- Welding or fabrication skills
- Forklift licence
