RESEARCH ASSISTANT in PUBLIC POLICY

The Role
Fitzwilliam College invites applications for a Research Assistant position.

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Fitzwilliam College community, and to work on projects that
are integral to the research agenda of the new Bennett School of Public Policy (BSPP) which is led by
Professor Michael Kenny, who is also a Professorial Fellow at Fitzwilliam College.

The Research Assistant will undertake a range of research tasks under the supervision of Professor
Kenny. They will enjoy the benefits of engagement at a senior level in a lively and supporting College
environment (most likely through election to a Bye-Fellow) while also being affiliated to the Bennett
School’s community of academics and policy researchers.

The post-holder will undertake a range of research tasks in support of the Departments’ programmes
of research on some of the most pressing and important challenges affecting the governance and
democratic health of the UK. They will, more specifically, work on projects on one or more of the
following themes: the political and policy dimensions of devolved governance across the UK; the
development of England’s model of devolution; inter-governmental relations; falling political trust;
and regional policy and place-based policymaking.

There may well be an additional opportunity to contribute to the teaching of the Human, Social and
Political Sciences tripos at Fitzwilliam.

The successful candidate should have a good first degree in one of the Social Sciences or another
cognate discipline, an excellent understanding of British politics and policy, and experience of
qualitative research methods. They should be flexible and adaptable and may be called upon to
support the delivery of events at Fitzwilliam or the Bennett School.

Bennett School Of Public Policy
Launched in August 2025, the Bennett School of Public Policy aims to develop successful and
sustainable public policy solutions to some of the most pressing problems of our time. Its core ethos
is formed by a commitment to the value of sustainable growth, more equally shared. The School
conducts policy research and engagement on many of the greatest policy challenges of our age,
including the dangers and potential of emerging technologies for government, the implications of
new kinds of geographical inequality and the particular challenges facing ‘left behind’ communities,
and the profound implications of stalling productivity in the west.

As well as providing in-depth analysis and high-quality research, the School’s work is characterised by
the drive to provide solutions to these and other deep-seated problems. It is committed to developing
a powerful network of policymakers, influencers, and researchers at Cambridge and beyond, and
seeks, through its teaching provision, to create new generations of reflexive and skilled policy leaders
who understand the growing threats to democratic politics.

Terms & Conditions
• This appointment is on a fixed term for a maximum of two years on a full-time basis linked to a

specific donation funding the post.

It is anticipated that the successful candidate will start around 2 September 2026 in time for the

start of the academic year 2026-27.

The person specification for this position lists qualifications that are essential and/or desirable. If

The appointment will be subject to the Statutes and Ordinances of the College.
The stipend of the Research Assistant will be an FTE annual salary of £34,610 – £35,608 and will be

pensionable. The stipend is subject to an annual inflationary increase. The post-holder will have
an office in College.
