1. JOB PURPOSE
To organise and supervise yard operations to ensure the safe, efficient, and controlled movement of vehicles, effective management of materials, and high standards of housekeeping across the yard and surrounding areas. The role supports overall site performance by ensuring operational flow, readiness of materials, and compliance with safety and environmental standards.
Reporting to the Operations / Production Manager, this role is critical to the overall site efficiency, supporting production, logistics, and operational teams.
The Yard Supervisor will drive improvements in Safety, Health, Environmental standards, quality, and productivity.
2. DIMENSIONS
The Yard Supervisor will take full responsibility for yard operations and staff designated to this area.
Direct reports: 3 Yard Operatives (may fluctuate)
Responsible for vehicle control, yard organisation, material control, waste management, and housekeeping standards.
Accountable for achieving key performance standards in Safety, Organisation, and Efficiency.
3.PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES
Duties will involve:
Vehicle & Yard Control
Manage and coordinate all vehicle movements within the yard safely and efficiently.
Control deliveries and collections, ensuring minimal disruption to operations.
Ensure all yard access points, including gates, are secured, locked, and formally checked at the end of each shift in line with site security procedures and keyholder responsibilities.
Housekeeping & Site Standards
Maintain high standards of housekeeping across the yard and front of buildings.
Ensure all areas remain clean, organised, and free from hazards.
Promote a culture of ownership and accountability for yard standards.
Materials Management
Ensure all materials are stored, labelled, and controlled effectively.
Maintain clear visibility of stock locations and accessibility.
Support accurate stock control and efficient material flow to operations.
Waste & Environmental Control
Manage all waste bins and disposal processes.
Ensure recycling is segregated correctly and placed in designated areas.
Promote environmentally responsible practices across the yard.
Health, Safety & Compliance
Support development of a strong safety culture targeting zero harm.
Ensure all activities comply with company procedures and standards.
Identify hazards and take prompt corrective action.
Team Leadership
Lead and supervise yard operatives.
Promote engagement, accountability, and performance standards.
Support training and development of staff.
Operational Support
Assist other departments when required.
Collaborate with production and management teams.
Continuous Improvement
Identify and implement improvements in yard layout and processes
Support safety, efficiency, and cost reduction initiatives.
4. DECISION MAKING AUTHORITY & CONTROLS
- Make decisions based on operational requirements and experience.
- Ensure all procedures and standards are followed.
- Escalate issues where appropriate
5. SPECIAL FACTORS
- Experience in yard, logistics, or manufacturing environment preferred.
- Previous supervisory experience desirable.
- Strong organisational and problem-solving skills required.
