Job Summary
You will support the estimating and commercial function by combining key principles of Quantity Surveying and Cost Control. Reporting to the Estimating Manager, the role focuses on pre-contract activities including cost estimation, material take-offs, and bid preparation, while applying cost control techniques to ensure accuracy and consistency.
The successful candidate will play a key role in producing competitive and commercially robust tenders, maintaining cost data, and ensuring effective handover of successful bids to the project delivery team.
Essential Duties
- Raise contract numbers and set up job folders in accordance with company procedures
- Measure isometrics and collate technical and commercial information for bid preparation
- Carry out accurate material take-offs from drawings and specifications
- Prepare detailed cost breakdowns and submit estimates to clients
- Process enquiries and prepare and submit quotations in a timely manner
- Analyse historical data and adjust norm factors to reflect previous performance and site conditions
- Develop and improve estimating systems to enhance efficiency and accuracy
- Maintain document control during the estimating stage, including managing revisions and drawing registers
- Ensure all bids are returned within required deadlines and to a high standard
- Liaise with internal departments to ensure all technical and commercial aspects are captured
- Handover successful bids to the projects team, ensuring clarity of scope, assumptions, and cost-buildups
- Support cost analysis, benchmarking, and continuous improvement of estimating accuracy
- Review competitor pricing and market trends where appropriate
- Complete estimates in line with company procedures and client requirements
- Pricing up variations and submitting them to clients

Competency Requirements
- Good understanding of estimating, cost control, and quantity surveying principles
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, including isometrics
- Strong capability in material take-offs and cost build-ups
- Commercial awareness and understanding of project cost drivers
- Strong numerical, analytical, and problem-solving skills
- Proficient in Microsoft Excel and estimating tools
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet tight deadlines
- Effective communication skills
Other Requirements
- Typically 2-5 years experience in estimating, cost engineering, cost control, or quantity surveying
- Experience within construction, mechanical, piping, fabrication, or engineering environments (preferred, but not essential)
- Ability to work independently under the guidance of the Estimating Manager and as part of the wider team
- Well-organised with a proactive and methodical approach
Qualifications
- Degree (or equivalent) in Quantity Surveying, Commercial Management, Engineering, or a related discipline - essential
- NVQ Level 3 in Pipe Fitting - preferred
Pay: £42,000.00-£58,000.00 per year
